Horton Jupiter: "I HATE MUSIC JOURNALISTS!!!"
PG£: 'OH YEAH..I HATE THEM TOO!! THEY'RE ALL ABSOLUTE CUNTS!"
HJ: "They only want coke and money - that, and to say they were there ahead of the game - that they saw the music before anyone else!!!."
PG£: 'YEAH!!! FUCKING WANKERS!!'
It can't be far off a year ago since I first saw they came from the stars i saw them play a gig.
Yes boss, time flies, but my memory hasn't..
THE GIG
It was a tricky night in Shepherds Bush....
At the time, I was hawking myself around and about a number of bands and acts, looking for those that really captured my imagination - those who I could follow around like a desperate and lost dog, as they rose onwards and upwards into the stratosphere...
Well, that night in Shepherds Bush I found just such an act...
Yes boss, it was obvious the band had consumate class, even though the gig itself was close to a complete disaster: The electronics didn't work, the set become disjointed, the crowd disinterested and the show ended early when Dan stormed off the stage throwing his bass down to leave an almighty(and very pleasant) HUUUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
But I was enraptured...
THIS IS WHAT WE ALL NEED!! I thought, A band with proper chaos and passion. A band who aren't afraid of a little white colour drama LIVE on stage. A band WHO CAN CLEARLY PLAY!!! A band with a philosophy of peculiarity, that makes joyous, complete and perfect sense!!!
So, I set about following 'the stars'...
I turned up at the LP photo shoot...
Things got out of hand: One minute I was the picture of journalistic, reflective, calm and abstraction, the next I was dressed as an all in white Hari Krishna and stood next to a semi-naked woman in the corner of the sleeve...
Then there was the video...
Tell me this...
What other band can make a pop video this good on a budget smaller than most pop video directors spend on the chair with their name on???
And what other band, can get Kevin Rowland (formerly of Dexys Midnight Runners) & Sean Booth of Autechre in as guest stars in that self same video???
Yes boss, my initial appraisal of this band was bang on and having now seen them play a further 7 or 8 times and got to know and understand them a little more, it's no surprise to me that 2008 see's a fresh momentum going on with they came from the stars i saw them....
There's an up-and-coming record label, publicists, management, a booking agent, a worldwide distributor. There's a European tour, an unofficial minister of information, and most importantly 2 of the best albums of recent times neatly placed in the glass fronted cupboard...
Yes, this year the Kite is set to fly and it's rumoured that none other than one 'Lionel Richie' is to be holding it's special guest strings...
So, first up on the stars world domination plan is this gig in the rather swanky environs of Notting Hill Arts Club.
Yes boss, this Friday sees somekind of a LIVE showcase for the worldwide distributor Pinnacle.
Basically, the place'll be packed full of Team Stars, the glorious hangers on, the groupies, the fans, the curious, the educated, the bizz, as well as the posh and beautiful euro socialite young women of Notting Hill - all looking about to see this fine band. (Shit, even Mrs Giovanni's coming along and SHE NEVER EVER COMES OUT!!!!!)
So, if you're in London and sane, you'd better make damn sure you come along...!
(Oh, and just to be clear: I'm always ahead of the game, this year I'll make a lot of money, and I'll be damned with 50 million tonnes of concrete, if I don't end up spending absolutely all of it on coke!!!)
