QUESTION NUMBER 1

Current mood: HUNGRY FOR FACTS!!!
Category: HUNGRY FOR FACTS!!! Music

Why is it that
Led Zeppelin have all this comeback credability and Deep Purple are seen as being a bit of a tired and fat old joke???

Is it because, Zeppelin lost a memeber to death, and then skulked about being moody for 20 odd years, whilst Deep Purple kept touring, and replaced band members like they were plectrums????

I mean musically they are one and the same aren't they...??

Perhaps Deep Purple should have their own reality TV show, after all it did wonders for Ozzy, didn't it? And if they got Ritchie Blackmore back on them, then you'd have tantrums, fist fights and the lot. Once Blackmore threw his guitar at Ian Gillan on stage and walked off, sulking. That would grab the viewers attention. I wonder how many people know nowadays who Black Sabbath was just because of that stupid program. Although, it doesn't explain why Led Zeppelin are considered cool and Deep Purple, not...

I'm waiting for the Deep Purple revival but I don't think it'll ever happen...

Their big mistake was to keep going and not have someone die on them...

Same error that Hawkwind made. Shit, if only Hawkwind hadn't been fatly trawling it around working mens clubs of the last 20 years, they'd be being proudly sited left, right and center by all the cool bands of the moment....

Amen to that, brother! But the problem with Hawkwind is that they've released some pretty naff records during the 80's. It's an injustice that Space Ritual is not mentioned as one of the best live albums ever! And people don't realize how influential Hawkwind were. After all they were John Lydon's favorite band. And I think, if I'm right, that even the Orb did a version of Silver Machine on one of their Peel sessions.
I'm also waiting for an Alice Cooper revival. His early 70's stuff are bloody brilliant

Damn right...

Hawkwind basically overcooked things and ruined the legend...

I'm sure The Orb covered them, and loads of these cool bands would love to, but they know that would be the end of their cool...

Alice is also brilliant. I have Schools Out on Vinyl with the fold out desk sleeve - it's a great record...!!

You should check out Monster Magnet in their prime, they did a cover of Brainstorm which is spot on. But, Monster Magnet iare really worthwhile for their early to mid 90's stuff. Also, Comets on Fire are quite good. They're even more raw, chaotic and fucked up than Hawkwind. Julian Cope has praised them by saying that they are "extremely brutalizing for the inner kinky and an excellent fuck for the head".

I don't know either Monster Magnet or Comets On Fire...

If Cope says they're a 'fuck for the head' they must be pretty damn unusual...

Monster Magnet the albums to check are: Spine of God, 25 Tab and Dopes To Infinity.
Comets on Fire believe me they're wild, Cope is not exaggerating, I saw them live and they are brilliant. Recommended albums are : Field Recordings from the Sun and Blue Cathedral. They're what good psychedelic rock should be: freaky, wild, over the top and absolutely far out.

Changing members willy nilly certainly doesn't help.

Its all about the thing you love. Well actually its partially about the thing you love.

Personality.

Theres more of a story and mystery with Led Zeppelin. Plus an enigmatic manager.

They didn't release singles which added to the mystery.

Theres a huge difference in sound too. Especially with the addition of the permanent keyboards in Deep Purples case.

Also Ian Gillain doesn't look like a rock god, Plant does. Gillain looks like a bricky who plays in a pub rock band at the weekend. Blackmore looks like an electrician who...blah blah blah.

A friend of mine when I was a youth didn't speak to me for weeks when I swapped from Purple to Zeppelin.

DP (oo-er missus) are too one dimensional. LZ weren't afraid of experimenting with sound.

Zeppelin were always more popular, even before Bonhams death.

I think the PR and management aspects are crucial to Led Zeps success...

Good points on the looks - Plant 'looked' like a Rock God...

I had a friend who announced one day he was officially no longer into Guns N Roses and only liked thrash from that point on. He'd clearly been thinking strategically...

The Cupid Kinkyboots Fan Club

Well duh, the Zep boys have sold like 200 million records and DP just can't get anywhere near that, so they had to keep touring to make a living. Thus, the record companies laud Led Zep-again so they can earn some extra bonus checks. Cynical? Yeah. Plus DP sucks.

Deep Purple are the same as Zep in the context that they were both put together by hot session musicians who know there way round a studio and wanted to perform epic music!
How epic and overblown you want is were the schism happens, and lets face it any band that will hire themselves out to record albums for other bands as Deep purple did when they played as The Velvet Underground on the 1972 album Squeeze a record that features no original members of The Velvet Underground on it. For that rather expensive crime to vinyl my copy of which is sitting next to me and cost £18 when I got it back in about 1986, knew I was being ripped off and couldn't help myslef I wanted to know what that bad an album sounded like!! Well for that crime alone Deep purple can never be as cool as Zep, oh and yes JImmy Page performed many such crimes but none as bad as Squeeze!
Comets On Fire certainly made me scratch my head a bit live, don't have any of there records though. and Monster Magnet are a truely great live band and went down a storm at the Download festival a few years ago!!

I actually saw Monster Magnet during the Powertrip tour in 1999 in Portugal when they played there on a Festival. It was on my 20th birthday and was a very good gig. They're still alright, though their later albums do lack the magic (and the fucked upness, I suspect they just changed from acid and weed to coke and that shows on their sound) from their early albums. But still I have quite a lot of bootlegs from them that I downloaded from the net

Nonstop Everything

i am repeating myself here, but led zeppelin were a great COVER band. only a handful of their hits were actually composed by them. in that sense, deep purple have way more credibility.
