THE FINANCIAL HABBITS OF INDIE LABELS

Current mood: MAKING THE RULES...
Category: MAKING THE RULES... Music

It's my opinion that:

ALL INDIE LABELS SHOULD GO BANKRUPT AS A MATTER OF COURSE, WITH NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Furthermore, Indie Lables should not EVER be worried about balancing the books or making money - if they start that kind of behaviour they are Majors, no matter their size or importance....

Yes boss, Indie Labels should be too busy ploughing money into dead end projects that are never complete because the artists have spent all the fucking money on drugs and guitar pedals...

Should an Indie label meet with any degree of financial success, the staff of said label should turn into coke heads and move into woefully over expensive loft flats with £8,000 glass tables BECAUSE THEY REALISE THEY ARE SO FUCKING IMPORTANT!!!!

If the tax man ever arrives at the Indie Labels office, rather than saying 'Oh hi there Malcom, I've got the figures you need just here..' before clicking a button on their Macs, said staff should look confused before shouting something to the effect that 'WE DON'T FUCKING NEED A NEW FUCKING STATIONARY SUPPLIER!!! NOW FUCK OFF!!!'

Furthermore, all Indie label employee's should laugh everytime they here the word 'accounts'...

The accountant (should one be employed) is the kind of guy who started (though never attended beyond the first session) an accountancy evening class to keep the dole off his back.

He should spend the first 3 hours of his working day in bed with a girl he met on the bus on the way home from the tri-weekly staff party...

When he arrives in the office, he should spend the day recounting the fine detail of the sexual antics of the previous evening and the first 3 hours of that working day, before issuing a great fat wedge of petty cash to the office runner to 'GO SEE FAT DEGS, AND GET ME SOME FUCKING SUPPLIES!!!!'...

The good old days

etc..

As a Manifesto, I doubt this would impress the Bank Manager.

YOURE A MENTALIST!!!! Have you had your medication today?

It was alright for Tony Wilson to live by this philosophy, but he had a well paid day job to finance it (and eventually New Order/Joy Division).

The Cupid Kinkyboots Fan Club

I met an accounting student on the bus one time. He didn't work for a record company though, and we only spent 20 minutes in bed, 'cause he was late to class. Close enough?

Paul don't talk to me about that lusy no good tax man on this week of the year when he has just picked my pocket more than clean and that horrible fat cheque is in the post to that mutha that expects to be paid tomorrow the no good shit. I'm sure he'll blow the lot on betting Northern Rock are gonna recover and the Republicans to win in November the stupid asshole.
Oh and you knew Gary from Rough Trade then, he had that routine down for years, I'd see him at some gig like the Voodoo Queens sidling up to any semi comatose women asking for a bed for the night because he works for rough trade like....Etc Etc etc...

The ***Man is still after me for a year and halfs worth of tax from my record retailing operation of 2002/3...

There are many Gary's...

After finding one such working for The PGC, I've instigated a complete 'root and branch' enquiry into how and why it could have happenned...

Success in art and commerce are not mutually exclusive.

A balance can be found in the force...I feel it.
