ALBUM REVIEW :: PARIS HILTON - PARIS HILTON :: AKA UNWRITTEN RULES

Current mood: REFLECTIVE
Category: REFLECTIVE Music

You can stone me and set alight to my pulpy remains if you like, but here's a stone cold fact - Paris Hiltons first LP was alright...

Yes boss, as female vocal diva pop LPs go, her eponymous record was completely and absolutely fine.

It was a lot better than almost every record Kylie's ever done, a mile better than Jennifer Lopez has ever been, and a big improvement on most of Madonna's LPs.

It had 3 or 4 decent singles including an hilarious version of Do You Think I'm Sexy by old Uncle Rod and it should have sold a few million and launched Hilton as pop star...

So why didn't it sell??

Well, it's a simple fact that Paris Hilton will never have a successful record, as won't Kate Moss.

No boss, one or the other of them could come up with the most innovative recorded artifact since the Aphex Twins Richard D James and it would be roundly scorned, then torn limb from limb, for the simple reason that the world is certain neither Moss nor Hilton have talent - therefore they don't...

There are certain unwritten rules to success and one is that folk don't like to see vacuos models or heiresses have successful careers as anything other than as vacuos models and heiresses.

It's the same for a number of other big names:

Madonna will never EVER be credited as an actresss, Guy Richie will never make a critically acclaimed or successful film again (so long as he's married to Madge) and Bryan Robson will never be a successful football manager. David Bowie will never be anything other than a wooden actor, Mick Jagger will never make a successful solo record and Ringo Star will always be a buffoon...

Yes boss, though the public might love Madonna, they don't want her to ever be considered to have acting talent on top of her looks, business acumen and successful singing career - it's simply too much to give to one person..

Similarly, Guy Richie will never have his own creative success again because there's simply too much jealousy of who he sleeps with every night. If he ever divorces Madonna, you can bet your arse his next project will do very well indeed - but until then it will be failure after failure after failure..

Similarly anyone who marries Liz Taylor or Cher will always get divorced. These kind of icons belong to the public - they can never be owned or even squatted by an individual for longer than a few years...

The thing is, sometimes these folk do have some talent at these alternative careers and sometimes they don't, but it doesn't matter either way - they will never succeed...

So, if you want to hear a good poppy dance diva record, go and find Paris by Paris Hilton in the bargain bins - you'll be surprised...

its a sad, sad fact that the average Joe Public works one job that he does well enough at to pay the bills and scrape out a nondescript living until he/she reaches retiring age. So similarly, we like our celebrities to be good at one, maybe two things...much more than that and we start to get resentful that we either can't afford or won't permit ourselves to do the same.

Also the public view of Paris, in particular, is very heavily slanted, due to her antics over the years since that whole sex video drama. So she's established herself as a figure of scandal and reckless behaviour...not far removed from any girl who's ever appeared in a Girls Gone Wild video, except that she's heiress to the Hilton Hotel chain. Sadly, she'll have to work four times as hard to be taken seriously as someone of equal talent who was previously unknown.

This also gets back to the very human fear of a monster we know as Change. Very few people embrace change easily. Anyone who says they love change, I would challenge to change their established career path, residencies, relationship partners, etc...to something/someplace/someone that they're totally unfamiliar with...just for the pure sake of change. The fact is that change is not easy. We prefer familiarity and stability, in general. To me, its not surprising that Moss and Hilton aren't getting due credit for their respective explorations of other possible talents. Personally, I think its fab that Hilton is creating something other than headlines for her antics. My hat is off to her, genuinely.

Granted, her change in course SHOULDN'T be treated as that big of a deal by the general public, who's lives it doesn't truly affect in any tremendous way. Hilton putting out an album does not give me a raise at work...nor will it get my artwork any more or less noticed...so I honestly can't be arsed to keep track of her doings. But for people who have nothing better to do than gossip about celebrity shenanigans, this is a big deal...because it alters an already established expectation of what we perceive Hilton to be. We think we've got her all figured out, and then BAM! She goes and changes the game...and now we have to scramble to reassess our image of who she is. I think its brilliant! But then I'm a tad misanthropic and take delight in anything that causes distress to Joe Plebian...

I think I might go look up her album now, just for the sake of curiousity. Thanks for alerting me to this!

It's a good pop diva LP...

Of course it has next to nothing to do with Hiltons talents in any way shape or form - it's a production job through and through and that's where the talent is...

But if I'm judging records purely on how good they sound, I would say this is a better pop diva record than most I've heard...

Mr. Mark

i enjoyed this greatly. this is so true, the public is fickle and doesn't recognize talent even when it comes from someone like paris.

Well, like I said above - I'm not sure that Paris is showing that much talent on this. The vocals are good, but they are very heavily produced...

This so, I'm sure if this LP had been made by someone else it would have done a whole load better...

And I quote, "...a big improvement on most of Madonna's LPs."

Even Lopez has a little bit of oomph?

Don't get me wrong. Paris Hilton has as much right to be on this planet as the rest of us sorry lot.

I just think she should stick to perfume. Or clothes or something.

Or might she IS the perfect incarnation of a futuristic 21st century clone pop Diva?

My image of a Diva though is somewhat different to this.

What do i mean.." Or MIGHT she is..", etc.?

Where am I now? Sixteen undreds?

What I meant was "Or MAYBE she is..",etc.

I've been to a couple of pubs..in a quaint old English back of beyond type place.

It's not my fault.

: THE FUTUREPROOF MUSIC BLOG BY PIOUS GIOVANNI :

Yes, shitloads of both...

There are some really ropey Madonna LPs, paricularly the mid period ones. In fact they're all ropey. In my opinion, Madge is very much a singles artiste and very few divas have ever made good, coherent and complete LPs..

Oh, and JLo just wiggles her ass...

(and it's not even a great ass)

Wendy

I would never listen to a Paris Hilton LP unless I was really forced to, out of politeness or something.
