Trendsville UK alt chart land mid/late 90's:

Brit Pop VS Dance Music????

One: Media creation
Two:

- Brit Pop

Blur = Cartoon cliched comic crap...
Oasis = The worst possible mix of The Beatles & The Sex Pistols
Pulp = Fine lyrics - A decent band
The Boo Radleys = A desire to turn things over and challenge
Radiohead = Talented but miserable - GIVE US HOPE WHY DON'T YOU??!!

+ Dance music:

Goldie = Timeless: Say no more
Tricky = Maxinquaye: Deep and darkly sexy
Aphex Twin = Richard D James: Redefines your day better than a punch in the face

And those 3 weren't the biggest sellers...

Underworld
The Prodigy
Leftfield

/

and the good second rung Brit Pop bands???

Dance music = Soul, pain, heat, energy, intensity, fire, ecstacy, power, energy...

-

Brit Pop / old remakes of history with good financial safe backing.

=

Money made, job done, move onto The THE

When The coke PR completely washes off

I know where my money is...

you know that i love you, but...
FOR THE LOVE OF JUDAS!!! why hark on about radiohead being misrable?
is that the only thing you or anybody has aginst them?

I wouldnt mind if you hated them cos you dont like yorkes voice, or because you thought that the atonal guitar solos were shit...

Granted, the lyrics on plabo honey were a bit boo hoo hoo (early days). and the lyrics on the bends arnt exactly supergrass.
but from ok computer to hail to the thief, thier lyrics mainly delt with abstrct politics. in which case they are no more misrable than rage against the machine. their new album mainly consists of love songs.

they are not as misrable as the smiths, joy division, massive attack, my dying bride, portishead, lou reed, half of george micheals back catoluge, jeff buckly, lennoard cohen, mars volta... i could go on....

why should radiohead give us hope when every other band of that time was telling us how great it was to be brittish, when it quite clearly wasn't. they were not brit pop but Ok computer was the album that burst the britpop buble. britpop and the brit art scene was heavily finded by the goverment at the time to encourage forgin investment in london based companies. like you have said it was a marketing ploy and I think a handfull of bands saw through this. and radiohead was one of them.

they have tried to do happy sounding tunes, one of which was called 'pop is dead' from 1993. believe me, if you herd it you would never want to hear another happy radiohead tune again..its alful!

as for their intierviews, they were whored out by their record companies at an very early stage, espically in america. when all they wanted to do was stay in the studio. i would be pissed off too and it appears to be a mood that the media simply cultivated. that is why radiohead banned the nme from inteviewing them for nearly 10 years. (they apparently predicted thom yorks sucicide and labeld him the next ian curtis).

bottom line, is that they are probally the only giant band on this planet that achually deserve their sucess, (red hot chilli peppers?). i truly wish you could see past this misrable thing, as i really think your life would be a little better for it.

what is your poision? californication or paranoid android?

KvKvG

indeed they have my friend.

House of cards is about sex. and their is a track on hail to the thief called 'we suck young blood'. its recorded at 80bpm, apparently it was the intention that people would have sex to this song.
Bones is probally all about sex as well
Radiohead are all about the sex. i lost my virginity to the bends, loads of my mates lost thier virginity to that record, what other record was at the time to pop your cherry to (2006)? you couldnt do it to fucking parklife that would of been wrong!

There's a lotta love and sex on the new one. Very little misery and just enough paranoia. Thats what makes it so good.

They HAVE earned it, by challenging everything. After OK Computer there were so many soundalike bands, then they turned into something that no-one could copy.

You still won't like the new album, because you're looking to hate it. Or you'll avoid it just in case you like it.

There's so much joy in loving a band like Radiohead.

I'm afraid I can't agree with much of this analysis..

I've listened to the new LP and though it's a little more cheery than normal, I don't find it to be anything too remarkable off first play..

Furthermore, Kid A wasn't challenging. It was merely a poor version of Autechre. Basically, they listened to a lot of electronica (much of which is far better and far more likely to last) and tried to copy that sound because they figured that was gonna be the type of music that would survive from this generation..

They've even admitted that...

I'm not looking to hate this LP, I just dislike Radiohead and Thoms voice...

And I still don't hear the joy...

Colossus

LOL! At last...or were u joking? Hmmm...

Anyway wanted to say that Portishead should of been up there on your dance catergory list thingy MR G ...they are releasing a new album called Third and are a big influence on the quiet stuff I've done with COLOSSUS.

Tricky did a song called Hell is Round The Corner which features the same backing track as a song that Portishead did back in the day...if you can find out the title I'll buy you TWO pints tonight at the gig.

CLUE TO ANSWER: 'Tired, of playing, playing with this bow and arrow..."

Spider xx

P.S MASSIVE ATTACK anyone? What a great band.

I can't get too much into Portishead. Like Radiohead, they bring me down after 4 or 5 tracks...

Massive Attack certainly had their moments: Unfinished Sympathy was one HUGE ONE. However, I think MA's last 2 Lps have been duff. Mezzanine had a very distinct sound, but it was too dark and dreary for my tastes..

The sample is from Isaac Hayes's "Ike's Rap III"

I don't think I'm gonna make it tonight, so you'll have to carry those pints over to the 27th..))

Mezzanine is fucking awesome! It's not better than Blue Lines but it is awesome. Mad Professors remix version of the 2nd one was better than the actual album too.

Massive Attack were fantastic, but thet better come up with a better album than the last one. They've been a big influence on Clinker at certain times.

disliking radiohead is one thing, but if you dont like portishead and mezzanine. then you obviously have some musical gag reflex for the gloomier side of music...which may also explain your dislike of nick cave?
i guess some of us find beauty in the darker side of life.
and you are obviously a jolly chap who doesnt want any band to harsh your happy buzz. which is more than cool.

i will leave it at that, as long as you can admit that as artists, these bands are bona-fide.

one band that hasnt been metioned from the britpop era, who i think aso deserve total fucking credit for being amzing are the super furry animals - they are the happy radiohead. :) :) :) :) :) :) :0 :) :) :) :)

Life can be gloomy enough without musicians drawing attention to it's gloominess...

I can accept these people have talent, but they should use it better. I want to be uplifted by culture, not made to fell worse...

Loads more "White Label Stuff" that I was far too stoned to remember the names of...

...because as they say, if you can remember the 90's, you weren't really there. I've just had to refresh my memory by going through all me old tapes.

YES TAPES!

And Massive Attack WERE a great band. As are Radiohead.

Hell yes, that's a very good list - so good I'm gonna leave all 3 copies of it...

Comparing guitar based music to the electronic stuff in the 90's illustrates all of my points about the long term importance of The Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Brit Pop etc

The strength and depth of the elctronic stuff is 50 times as strong

It's like Manchester United vs Gainsborough Trinity

Vasco

I agree, Britpop was absolute overhyped rubbish. At the time during the whole Blur vs. Oasis, I was like fuck that shit, give me Slayer! There was indeed good stuff happening on the dance scene, but on the same token dance is absolutely deluged with tons of rubbish. Dance music is around 90% rubbish, but the 10% that it's brilliant, it's stunning. With Radiohead I actually quite like them, but their first two albums are rubbish. I really can't stand Creep or those lifeless acoustic ballads like High and Dry or Fake Plastic Trees. But, there was other interesting stuff besides dance during the 90's. Spiritualized are amazing for instance. And PJ Harvey also comes to mind. Also you had amazing stuff that was kind of crossover between dance and more so called alternative stuff: Primal Scream (XTRMNTR is their best album, much better than Screamadelica), Add N to (X), Echoboy, Death in Vegas. And some really good albums by veterans like David Sylvian (Dead Bees on a cake is fabulous). So, luckily the 90's weren't just Britpop, thank goodness for that!

Well yes..

As with the undercard of dance, some of the 'lesser well known' guitar based bands of the time are clearly better including most of those you mention (though many fo those have a decent sized electronic element to their sound)...

It's an arbitrary distinction anyway.

I think my general point is that electronic sounds were where the development was really happening in the 90's...
