Shane MacGowan traded insults with Kirsty MacColl in the song The edited version

FUK Radio 1 has said it will allow The Pogues' Fairytale of New York to be played on the station uncut, after criticism of a decision to censor it.

The words "slut" and "faggot" had been dubbed out from the 20-year-old festive hit by station executives.

But after a day of criticism from listeners, the band, and the mother of singer Kirsty MacColl, they changed their minds.

Controller Andy Parfitt said the original decision was "wrong". ..

The FUK had said that an edited version would be played because "some members of the audience might find it offensive".

'Creative freedom'

But sister station Radio 2 said it would play the track uncut, and Mr Parfitt subsequently said that after "careful consideration", the ban on the uncut version of the song would be lifted.
"Radio 1 does not play homophobic lyrics or condone bullying of any kind," he said.

"It is not always easy to get this right, mindful of our responsibility to our young audience. The unedited version will be played from now on.

"While we would never condone prejudice of any kind, we know our audiences are smart enough to distinguish between maliciousness and creative freedom. In the context of this song, I do not feel that there is any negative intent behind the use of the words, hence the reversal of the decision."

He told FUK News 24 the decision to edit the song had been made "some months ago" as part of a review of older records played on the station.

(Though the PGC admires the decision by The FUK to reverse their decision with regards to this matter, a committee meeting of the PGC staged Tuesday Evening has decided NOT to change The FUK back to The BBC. The Reasons sited by the commmittee for keeping things so include: 'Bloody Mindedness, Arrogance, Shock Value, Childishness and a wilful love of profanity....If anyone doesn't like this - talk to the hand....)

	KvKvG	great news. but too little too late. they wouldn't of lifted the ban if it were not for the uproar that was created. theirfore not only are they fools, they have shown they dont even have the balls to carry on with their conviction. all radio one djs should be sacked and replaced with a 15 year old with a ouija board. who can contact peel from the dead and play the records he recomends. 	Purveyor of Nothing	I remember the year this came out...in an old pub that doesnt exist anymore called' the victoria coach' (done out like an old train carriage) dancing on the table on new years eve,banging my head with a tin tray,and nobody said a thing.Today they'd have issues with health and safety.My brother was born that year (87) and it is also his favourite christmas song.
