Report stolen from the BBC

US soul legend Ike Turner, the former husband of Tina Turner, has died at the age of 76.

He died at his home near San Diego, California. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

He rose to fame in the 1960s, and is best remembered for his musical partnership and stormy marriage with Tina Turner.

She said he abused her, but he somewhat rehabilitated his image in his later years, winning a Grammy in 2007. .. E SF -->

"Ike Turner passed away this morning. He was at his home," said Scott Hanover, an official at the performer's management company.

'Demonised'

Turner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is credited by many music historians with making the first rock 'n' roll record in 1951.

Turner was also known as a prolific session guitarist and piano player.

After marrying Tina Turner in 1959, the pair produced a string of hits, including A Fool In Love, It's Gonna Work Out Fine.

The song River Deep Mountain High, produced by Phil Spector, was one of their most successful singles.

But Mr Turner will be forever remembered for his turbulent relationship with Tina Turner, the BBC's Peter Bowes in Los Angeles says.

In 2001, Mr Turner denied his ex-wife's claims that he abused her and expressed frustration that he had been demonised in the media.

In 2007, he won a Grammy award in the traditional blues album category for Risin' With the Blues.

Probably the most famous popstar wifebeater (of the many). It's amazing the difference a film and a famouw wife makes...

Still...had a great meeting of the minds session with Eugene Machine which we can update you on (We handed them a song called You Must Be High which is VERY them but written by us...can't wait to hear thier version!). It's Xmas so meeting up again could be tricky but we'll work out something more concrete for next time ok?

There's no doubt he behaved like a savage cunt to a beautiful woman but I think there was more to him and his talent than that - and the first thing everyone thinks and says when you say Ike Turner is Wifebeater

James Brown
Hunter Thompson

both wifebeaters, but at least they're not Ike Turner...

oooh. ok, i know he was a bit naughty at times, but i have never, ever herd of hunter thompson hitting women, i now he has witnessed wife beating and done little to stop it, which aint good. and i know he once punched a girl to see if it would provoke her dog, but he was 15. where did you hear all this?

In the new biog Gonzo..

Edited by Jann Wenner, it's co-written by most of the key people who knew and spent time with Hunter. The physical abuse appeared to be a very occasional thing, but occurred, alongside plenty of mental grief to every woman who ever lived with him..

It's a bit of an eye opener to the real world of Hunter - the most amazing thing is that if anything his drug and drink intake in real life was even greater than the myths suggest...

Definately worth a read - though it's guaranteed to shake up your perceptions both + and -...

Hmmm, i had no idea that book had already come out, i will have to buy it next year when i have some cash. ive done some research over it, many say its a great book, while others have pointed out that wenner was jelous of hunters talent/sucesss and this book was maybe an attempt to distroy his image. i guess i wont know untill i read it. opinions?x

Well the thing that makes me believe it's pretty reliable is that it's not just written by Wenner. Everyone get's a say from his first wife, to a phalanx of his other girlfriends, Jack Nicholson, his friends etc..

It's a real diverse cast and from that you can pick in and around the bullshit as well as is possible without having known the man personally..

His last wife Anita has another one coming out in the spring. I'm looking forward to that to add more balance...

But don't think I'm moralising about any of the above - being exceptional requires huge pain and sacrifice and there are always nasty costs involved...

Frankly, any woman or man who lives with and loves anyone on the creative road is onto a hiding of some kind or another..

Artists, musicians and writers aren't the lovely dovey cute girls and boys they appear to be..

It's just that some's sins are publicised better than others and that's my point here...
