RE-REVIEW ::: Ibrahim Ferrer & Omara Portuondo - Rhythms Del Mundo

Current mood: LOOPY
Category: LOOPY Music

I love cover versions....

Of course some are complete crap, but when you get a good one, it not only gives you joy and pleasure, but adds a clever little trick to your DJ ability that often leads to attractive women looking at you in a serious way and asking intelligent questions about what the hell it is you think you're playing and why..

Yes boss, being a complete whore for such attention and often badly needing to cover my latest DJaying mistake, I have a vast collection of cover versions, including more than 20 different version of 'What A Wonderful World' as well as a nice selection of full cover LPs such as:

Lennon and McCartney: Tijuana Style
Hymns: Tijuana Style (both on Music For Pleasure)
&
Flying High: The New Generation Singers (Polydor).

All of these are pure and utter class and must be long overdue a re-release, as is my own full LP of
vicarious covers
which'll be coming your way in some form or another very shortly....

Anyway, whilst we wait for all of this to happen (which could well be a very long while indeed) why not try out Rhythms Del Mundo by Ibrahim Ferrer & Omar Portuondo??

Ibrahim & Omar are 2 of the musicians featured in the massively successful Buena Vista Social Club LP/film, and here they are back with what amounts to a greatest hits of covers, played Cuban style…

Now, I don't know if Universal have got these two by the balls and forced them to do what is essentially promo work for other artists to justify and recoup an over-ambitious advance, or whether this is a project they have their full and heart and soul in.

Whichever or neither, there are many good moments on this disc that make it worth the admission charge (an admission charge which includes a large chairty donation or the risk of a substantial donation ot copyright people if you like to download shit for free...)

In particular I like 'Clocks' by Coldplay, mainly because it swipes the seriousness and miserability out of Chris Martin and sways his reluctant booty into a little shake and dance..

Other highlights include 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' which conjures up images of Bono Vox in a Hawaiian skirt, dancing and swaying ,soulfully and singularly on the beach by (and in love with) himself (and no doubt to a TV audience of millions)

'She will be loved' is also nice and 'Killing Me Softly' made me wonder just what the hell happened to the original 'One Time!' Fugee's

Overall, I wouldn't go as far as to say this is an exceptional disc - there are simply too many average songs covered without any particular verve or panache - but it's the best one I've heard for a while, so I'd certainly recommend giving it a go....

My personal fave covers albums at the moment are the Trojan Sixties box 3cd's of classic sixties pop and rock tunes done Jamaican style, you can't beat Roland Alphonso doing Ode to Billy Joe etc. The other one is Les Enfant Du Velevts a great mini album of french bands doing the Velvet Underground from the mid 80's.
