CLASSIC ALBUM REVIEW :::: HERBIE HANCOCK - LITE ME UP

Current mood: BREEZY
Category: BREEZY Music

Seeing
Prince play LIVE twice in a night put a number of things into perspective here at Casa Pippy Giovanna.

One such thing, was the exact nature of class and talent.

Yes boss, that night and since that night, I've felt a new understanding of the pop heirachy. I've understood just how good you have to be to scale the international heights, how big
BIG really is and just how small and stupid most of the shit currently being knocked out at Tesco's is.

The last time I had this kind of sonic reality check was in the months after I naughty downloaded a
Herbie Hancock Discography.

Comprising a whole bunch of
Hancocks most important work, this collection consistently blew my head off with it's inventiveness, purity of sound, musical genius and investigative brilliance.

So what's the best way into Herbies vast back catalouge?

Well, there's a big old bunch of possibilities, but for it's accessability and pure pop class I'd say Lite Me Up is where it's at..

Released in 1982, Lite Me Up was Hancocks 33rd LP (not counting his countless cameos on others LPs) and with all the necesary pomp, it
pops it's mansion and says a big time HELLO! to the super pop soul sound of the early 80s...

Yes boss, gone is the smooth smokey jazz, and starting with
the eponymous title track, in comes the big horn and warm sound of early 80s New York. It's bright, uplifting and sounds great and fresh 25 years after the first spark...

The Bomb continues the theme. You play it and you're struggling to get into a club in 1982, there's too many boys, you can't get in, your hair gel is melting, you hear this coming out, you know there's hope, you know you're going to make it!

And so it continues...

There's the beautiful smooth groove of Getting to the Good Part, the soul edges in and over Paradise, and the occasional brilliant use of a vocoder throughout frequently makes the sound beauty jaw drop every time..

down? depressed?

LITE ME UP!!

Oh, and one last thing, this LP is considered to be one of Herbies least successful and least impressive LPs....

So there we go: Lite Me Up by Herbie Hancock - If you've not, you need to...
