Elton suddenly got a hit with a joke Rock 'N' Roll track - 'Crocodile Rock'.
Not only was it his first British hit, but it happened just at the time when dressing outrageously was a requirement for British pop stars.
To Elton, this was a dream come true and he decided to export the image of glam rock to America. For a concert at the Hollywood Bowl his stage set consisted of a star spangled staircase leading down to five grand pianos. Porn star Linda Lovelace came on stage and introduced 'the Queen of England.' At the top of the staircase a royal lookalike appeared and descended. She was followed by Batman, Robin, Groucho Marx, Frankenstein, the four Beatles, and finally Elton in white pants, white top, white feathers and five inch platform boots. As he reached the stage 400 white doves were released and the five piano lids openend to reveal a silver letter in each
