The Tacticians - Some Kind Of Urban Fulfilment LP
Setanta
Released August 13th 2007
I'm afraid there's nothing that new on this release.
We're talking the 3 men in a band routine: guitar, bass, drums - just the kind of thing my ex-wife might go for, especially when she learns they're floppy haired London boys with cute English accents....
According to the press release The Tacticians have been compared with The Kinks. Excepting the obvious hits, I know nothing about The Kinks other that I once had a curry with Dave Davies and a whole bunch of his friends in the wealthy satellite village of Broxbourne in Hertfordshire. I had prawn vindaloo and had no idea what to say to Mr Davies. I remember him recounting a story about how they used to rip the piss out of their keyboard player. One time the bone tickler was so drunk, they deposited both him and his matress in the lift and he spent the whole night zooming up and down...
Anyway how about this LP? Well, there's some OK lyrics here, but nothing too mind blowing, and whether you like this one is largely going to come down to whether you like this style of thing. You'll either like or it'll leave you cold. and I'm afraid I'm in the latter camp...
So, if anyone wants my promo copy, drop me your address and I'll send it on...
Pattie Blingh - Sagala
Ramp Recordings
Released 25th June 2007
Thus far it's been rare for me to get too very excited about the stuff I've been sent for free. There's been a few that have stood out. The Deadbeat LP The Marcelo Radulovich tripple set and more recently T-Toes Brasstronica have all been right up there. But most of the rest has either been bad, average or not bad..
Well, I'm pleased to say that this effort by Pattie Blingh is right up there in champions corner.
Sagala kind of crept out at me. It was one of those times when i wasn't really concentrating. In fact, I find that to be the best time to reviewing and objectify new stuff. If you sit there for too long and concentrate, and concentrate, and read the press release, all you're going to get is exactly what it says on the press release..
So, like I said, this one crept out when i wasn't really listening for it. I copied it onto my phone and again when it popped up I liked it each and every time.
What is it?
Well take 1 part Miss Dynamite, 1 part low jazz rumble, I part Gravediggaz and a whole bunch of randomness to boot and you're getting close.
I like it because it leaps about. It stops
it starts, it runs and saunters and sometimes it piles up...
I'm looking forward to more...
