Those of you who've been around for a while will remember me criticising the quality of Italian pop music after I returned from a weeks visitation to the old country a couple of months back...
Since then I've felt somewhat duty bound to uncover some good quality Italian music and put a rival case forward.
So here we go with some that's fucking fantastic, some that's very good, some that's interesting or all right and some that's funny and in need of been blown about like an empty crisp packet....
First up is an act I've known of for some time. He's called Bochum Welt and he's recorded a number of LPs for Rephlex. We're talking drippily bloopy electronica. It's LOVELY!!
Second, we have Zenima. Zenima does more interesting, flitchy and intricate electronica. She also kisses cats.What is it with girls and cats? Answers in the comments section and keep them clean!!
Whilst on the subject, I have to give mention to the band Pussy Amazing Make of this what you will - I have no fucking idea what it's all about other than the obvious and if anything it would appear to prove my inital hypothesis...
But no, I'm trying to challenge not reinforce and/or view dubious sub porn..
When you take opera and film music out of the equation, to get to the real quality in Italian music, I think you have to be looking in the area of house, disco and pop versions of both.
In the process of writing this, I've realised that producers such as Spiller (Groovejet with Sophie Ellis Bextor) Black Box (Ride On Time) and Stylophonic are all Italian
I also have a great LP entitled Sueno: The Essential Mediterranean DanceTrax. This frozen in timepiece from 88 or 89 has a written introduction courtesy of a loved up Andrew Weatherall. It overviews the pop dance house music of the late 80s. Half of it's Italian and it hosts some truly great stuff, nearly all of which has disappeared off the face of the friggin earth...
Yes boss, I've tried looking up names like Rosso Barocco, L.A.N.D.R.O & Co, DJ Lelewel & El Chico and there's no sign of them at all on myspace and the mighty Black Box have a mere 310 friends?! So, on that note, I'll take a pause and suggest you get yourselves over and make friends with Black Box, for the simple reason that Ride On Time is a huge fucking tune...
310 friends?!? They're either very picky or that's a fucking disgrace...
