The Nextmen hail from Cambridge - home of the toffee logic university, my good friends John & Heloise and so I've heard, the arch disabled physics legend Stephen Hawking - which all things considered doesn't really tally with what we have here from The Nextmen..
Yes boss, Cambridge is a sleepy, river railed quaint English country city and not the kind of place you'd think a record of this kind of mixed urban type might eminate from...
But thinking again, Cambridge is about as diverse multi cultural and mutli national as a city in the UK comes - that is if you discount London...
You see, the university and the myriad of cash-in English Language Schools and pseudo colleges means Cambridge is a city full of foreign youth diversity and this is exactly what we have here on This Was Supposed To Be The Future..
Yes. This record rolls along rather nicely. It has the peace and quiet of the country and the ethnic culture clash of a city. It's a quality, smooth, soulful pop record that dives in, out and around a whole host of genres with the same kind of ease and comfort as do Groove Armada...
There's leanings towards reggae, ska, r'n'b, soul, hip hop, electronica, lounge and just pure fun and light pop.
Indeed, by the sound of this, The Nextmen are an act who work hard at listening, who know their stuff, who walk around with their ears and minds wide open and ready for impressions...
So yes, this is a good one. It won't change your life, but on the evidence of what's here, The Nextmen can go much further down pop alley and can certainly sound good doing it...
