It's a bargain time to be a record buyer...
I mean a physical record buyer.
Yes, as everyone goes spazzwall over downloads, mp3s and ipods, many folk are shelling their entire collections of cds and vinyl without any thought at all, resulting in crock loads of rare and interesting bargains becoming available for peanuts in charity shops etc..
Thing was, I'd given up buying the physical item altogether until recently and I've never bought a download once. But given it's now such a buyers market and the prices on rare and unusual cds and records will - when the circle truns around - zoom back up, it's a good investment strategy nevermind a great chance to store up on fresh tunes...
So, here was todays 6 for 60p
Starting top left, we've got a rather obvious Frank Sinatra compilation. Thing was, I didn't own any Frank Sinatra until today. This collection is certainly nothing special and no kind of an investment, but it'll do for an intro to Frank...
The next is another of these free cover discs that are everywhere. This one's from Elle magazine. The general theme is Music to strut to! I put it on earlier with the expressed intention of strutting, but I fell asleep. It doesn't have the kind of disco diva anthems I was expecting. In fact it's a wierd colection that slides all over asome kind of RNB alt/pop axis...
Evolving Music was a complete blindshot. I'm listening to it now. It's a Rock,/Metally compilation and it's all shit except the first track which is fucking mentalist. It's by an act called Shellshock...
Next is Maxim - My Web.
Maxim was the rapper/dancer with the designer wierd pupils from The Prodigy. Shortly after The Prodigy peaked, both Maxim and Lanky Leeroy made their own ill-concived solo albums.
The main problem with both of these LPs was that neither of these boys appeared to have much in the way of musical talent. At least Leeroy had the good sense to get Lee 'Scratch' Perry in to do some production. This move saved it's resale value if nothing else.
Maxims stuff has very limited appeal on all levels and didn't sell well at the time, but this makes it rare and a sealed copy can be ebayed to hardcore Prodigy fans who know no better..
The dark blue covered disc is a promo copy of a Nightmares on Wax single. It's nothing special, but promo copies of Warp releases are always worth 10p...
And finally it's a Cacophony Sampler. I'm not sure if Cacophony is a label so much as a distributor because the stuff on here is all on labels that aren't Cacophony. Anyway it's compilation featuring luminaries such as Radioactive Man, Two Lone Swordsmen, Like A Tim, Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot...
Decent...
So there we go, stock up on this shit is what i say. When the kids of today get old and start getting all I love the past they'll be wanting to buy choice cds and vinyl by the bucket load...
If they don't, simply smash the cds up and make glitter balls out of the pieces...
