Right....
You're gonna have to bear with me this week because this film pre-production is taking up quite a bit of time, leaving less for insightful and delightful music writing...
Tonight I will do the hits and to keep you occupied until then, here we go with a rewind of my Radulovich trebble bill for all of those who didn't catch it the first time around..
I've been listening through Mr Rs work again recently and it stands up at least as well as when i wrote this, so get yourself over there and see what's what...
You see, the big bad wolf has been running wild...
So, before i get going, there's just time enough for one more short piece of flim (with a side helping of flam) and it goes like this...
How do you select friends on this spazzing spook space??
I'm complete surface on this and, for that matter, many issues.
Basically, if i see a picture i like i hit it straight away and make an application. I love this - I don't love that - Good piccy you're in, shit one, maybe not....
This selection method clearly explains why there are so many more women on my friends list than men.
Yes boss, even though I know men are far more anal and therefore more likely to want to read boorish music writing such as is my current trade, I click the girls everytime: They always look better, what can I do?
Anyway enough flamming already.....
I clearly remember finding Marcelo Radulovichs space. I was flicking and flighting about and i saw this peculiar shell like scimitar symbol against a blue background..
I clicked it and therein lay a clever and polished set of tracks that had just the sort of range and diversity I like.
Yes boss, we're talking all the magic ingredients that make the sticky out Giovannis ears wibble: Clear, well rehearsed musical ability, ideas, diversity, feel and soul, and some degree of uniqueness.
I listened again and a few more times and found the same attributes coming though. So, figuring i was probably the new John Peel and had discovered a genius, I left some kind of oficious comment comending Mr R on his FINE work and he came back at me with an offer of a few Cds and a few days later I recieved them...
He sent me the following:
Index
The Playground Slap
Nohayquepreocuparsepornada
Index is 3 soundscapes.
I listened to these on the train on the way to and from my medical trial. The train was full and I was swimming with the elephant man and to be perfectly frank, at times these sounds freakin well freaked me right out....
They reminded me of being about 21 years old, being stonned all day and night and listening to LPs like The Art Of Noise In No sense Nonsense and Chill Out by The KLF..
This time I wasn't stonned. In fact i was as clean as a whistle and cold turkeying on about 5 of my staples, but the thing is when you listen to these kind of atmospherics in a room with a bunch of drugs you know one or two things about your surroundings and security and when you're on a packed commuter train and sober as a methodist you're far more paranoid...At least that's what I found..
Nohayquepreocuparsepornada is a different rose bush altogether.
Driven by a fat and thick picked, plucked and slapped bass, Mr Radulovich shows himself to be one who likes to see the bass used above and beyond it's regular background rhythm keeping role.
In places his clever style reminds me a little of the work of Robert Trujillo (formerly of Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy and now Metallica) It's clean and precise and the result of many many hours hard practice.
The general sound here is continuos and funked distinct, but varried. The band is essntially the conventional 4 piece, but included are many other plonks and snippets of electronic noise and atmosphere..There's hints of jazz and rock funk and indie, but no one is clear and decisive and the BASS is always there....
A good number of the vocals are in, what i believe to be Spanish. I like this: Even good lyrics get boring if they are understood too soon..
So, in short, this is fresh and good and I double AA it...
Lastly and most favouritely comes The Playground Slap.
I guess in many ways The Playground Slap is similar to the above, but in The PS, the use of found sound and samples is more pronounced and the tunes a touch more poppy rock: There are clearer grooves and tighter tunes and the vocals are generally all English American.
Once again the production is very tight, well tuned and distinct. The bass dominates and thrusts the tracks along like some big fat momma driving her kids to school....
I love the smooth combinations of dispirate samples, freeswim and conventional band sounds. It doesn't sound like a band trying to dance or electronic trying to do a band..It's just a good fucking weave...
Check out tracks 7 & 12 in particular...There is some consumate and smooth shit..
So there we go. Marcelo Radulovich is for my US Dollars, one of the hardest working and best musicians I've found on myspace thus far.
There's these 3 LPs, there's projects like The Assholes, there's other collaborations and all of these can be found on or about hisspace and I'd highly recommend you get yourself over there damn quick and breathe in some air...
OK...done
(PS: If you want to find any decent band or musical artist to add to your friends list, I'd highly recommend running of Mr Rs. He has the best friends list I've seen. I'm in the process of lifting most of it, but haven't finished yet...)
