So, after doing that interview with Mr Black Victory, I started thinking about whether I'd ever seen a really good LIVE performance done by a laptop man. And it didn't take me long to remember I've seen 2 and they both took place on the same afternoon.
The venue was the Dedbeat Weekender. I think it was the last one of the three I went to and the acts in question were Bogdan Raczynski and Hrvatski
Whilst it lasted, The Dedbeat Weekender was a high quality institution. The basic idea was the same as that practised in the name of All Tomorrows Parties except the lineup was electronic and hop hippy with an emphasis on the experimental.
What we're talking about is a seaside caravan park rammed to the feathers with party people all of whom are off their faces on drugs and in this case listening to some of the finest electronic and rap music on the planet..
And what a line up! Over the 3 years I saw The Aphex Twin several times, Andrew Weatherall several times including one block busting 6 hour set with Mr Tenniswood aka Radioactiveman as Two Lone Swordsmen. Then there was more or less everyone on Rephlex: People like Cylob, DMX Krew, Mike Dred and Luke Vibert. There was the cast of Ninja Tunes and Control Tower, BBE & Haywire and many others I can't even remember now..
Meanwhile another stage dealt with Hip Hop. I remember seeing Jeru The Damaja getting shirty about people filming him (a rather paranoid argument he's surely now had to concede defeat on) and The Pharcyde amongst other less well known British Hip Hoppers.
The Dedbeat weekenders became my Glastonbury replacement and i set about a doubling principle for each new visit. 4 friends for the first, 8 for the second and i planned on 16 for the third, but i didn't have enough friends. Regardless of any silly maths, each one consituted a weekend of complete musical indulgence, excess and dancing where the rain didn't even come into it.
Anyway, Bogdan Raczynski and Hrvatski followed very close to if not actually one after another on the Saturday or Sunday afternoon....
And what did they do to make their sets remarkable and watchable??
They did roughly the same thing on both accounts, they went fucking mental.
They bobbbed and weaved and starred at their laptops in disbelief as the chaos of bangs and beats flew out of the speakers straight into their twisted sweaty fisogs. They became posessed by their sounds. Their bodies and faces contorting and shuddering as they pointed and pulled and felt every last beat...
It was a proper performance, it worked the crowd over good and proper, was entertainingly good to watch and was all round great....
