WHAT IS POP PT 2????

Current mood: THE GC...
Category: THE GC... Music

So...

Having had a good old consultation with you lot yesterday (thanks to all who contributed), I realised this issue is incredibly complex and might well take a long while and several blogs before it can be truly solved and then written up...

One of the things that emerged, is that there appear to be many different categories of pop music.

These categories include:

Cool Pop:@)
Temporal Pop
career pop
SUPER POP!!!

All of these are ways to categorise different pop artrists. I do however believe there's also a classification into which only individual tracks can fit. This category is called Classic Pop..

Here's some of the criteria to define a Classic Pop track...

A classic pop track has to be loved regardless of it's original or reissued chart placing.

It has to light up the eyes, whenever it comes on at any party.

It has to make people dance and/or sing who would not normally do so.

It has to be both utterly vacuos and drenched in meaning

The lyrics have to be remembered by all - even by those who claim to hate the tune, the band and everything about pop music.

It has to be sung outside pubs at 11.23pm and outside nightclubs at 2.03am.

It has to be played at weddings and funerals

It has to be on constant rotation on the worlds radio shows.

It has to be requested to be played on the worlds radio shows

Is there anything missing from this list??

GODAMMIT!!! I NEED MORE CLASSIFICATION THAN JUST Pop!

I NEED CATEGORIES AND SUB CATEGORIES AND FACTORS AND DIMENSIONS!!!!! WE NEED TO BREAK THIS DOWN AND FLIP IT OVER!!! IT NEEDS TO BE POWER POINTED AND TRANSMOGRIFIED UNTIL EVERY LAST BIT OF FUN HAS BEEN DRAINED FROM IT!!!!!

maryJane

so. a successful pop song is one that can be found on vh1-s classic program "pop-up videos."
i dont think this show is on anymore, so there must-nt be anymore quality pop songs around...and therefore your quest to define them is kinda pointless.

...POP into pop-up videos...

Colossus

'Bohemiem Rhapsody'.

Nuff said.

Spider xx

P.S Missing from the list: It must appeal to peeps who don't even listen to that genre of music. Ian Wright apparently LOVES Rhapsody but HATES rock. I really like Destiny's Child, but like alot of people into mainly rock, HATE Rnb.

Also any song that is constantly covered in a multitude of genres and keeps turning up all over the place reworked and retooled but still that classic tune such as Guantanamera or Whiskey in the Jar or god help us Yesterday;)

I usually can't avoid Piano Man, and god, I sound incredible after a couple of bottles of Soju.
There's usually a little Bullet in the Head, and perhaps Patsy Cline's Crazy for good measure...

Hey Ya is a perfect example as it's a song that I had heard as a cover version before I ever heard Outkasts version. The moment bands heard that song they had to play it, which is why I saw Steve Wynn and his band doing there souped up Psych rock version of it first!!
Also lets add Tainted Love into this list as it's a song that most people don't have a clue who originally wrote and sang it. and trust me Gloria Jones version is mighty, but everyone still thinks Soft Cell did it first way before Marilyn Manson et al weighed in.
