Current mood: WAITING AND WORKING....

What makes it BIG and what doesn't never ceases to amaze me...?!?
I mean, I've come to accept that vapid karaoke pop will sell millions - because most folk are too tired after their weeks dog work to go out and find a more interesting or creative act. I've also come to accept that Tribute bands are most definately here to stay for much the same lazy reasons..
However, I still can't accept Snow Patrol, and it's because I can't, that I've accepted success to be something impossible to MAKE happen.
Yes boss, as I see it today, there's a vein of creative money gold that runs through the atmosphere and millions are chisseling away with good quality tools trying to get at it. Some hit the vein and some don't, and there's no clear rules to differentiate the who's and nots - though there's definately things that can help in the quest...
(knowing people, an Oxford education, luck, good management, timing, sustained and determined effort, experience, tact, contacts, people skills, money, the weather, the stars, talent etc)
In particular, one thing I've struggled with this week is the fate of David Lynchs comedy series On The Air..
On The Air was taken up by ABC as Twin Peaks was imploding. Using most of the actors from TP, On The Air piloted successfully, but inner business wranglings meant only 7 episodes were made and only 3 shown in the worst possible slot so ABC could easily ditch it...
Yes boss, it's one thing understanding that some folk make it and some don't, but I find it very VERY difficult indeed to understand why a TV network would ditch a very promising and original comedy series from a clearcut and proven genius..?!?
I'm sure much went on behind the scenes and maybe Lynch is difficult to work with if you're a bit of a tit, but Jesus, take a close look at the detail of this and you know it would have been huge had it have been given 30 episodes.
Seriously...
The characters who just wander through shot are more exciting and complex than most comedy shows manage from their leads - and as for the heavy sweat of Blinky Watts and his powers of sight.....PURE CLASS!!!
When you say David Lynch, too many folk get caught up on the wierdness, but he just makes me laugh. He has such a depth to all of his characters - he see's the human race so clearly and with so much mood joy, honesty and compassion...
So, I guess the failure of On The Air once again shows the true and real motivation of the creative 'businesses'
Yes boss, a CB, whether it be publishing, music or TV, works to instantly gratify, to create money, and to prop up the egos and short term personal successes of the non creative staff, rather than to produce and promote good art.
Anyway BLAH BLAH FUCKING BLAH!!!
Here's Episode 1 of On The Air...
(I have all 7 episodes in much better quality avi format, so if anyone wants the set, drop me a message and we can sort something out)
