THE BRITS 2008...

Current mood: SUNDAY NIGHT
Category: SUNDAY NIGHT Music

So, once again I'm watching TV and once again I'm getting furious...

That's a lie. I'm not furious so much as blown out and irritated..

The program was the launch of 'The Brits 2008. It was on ITV2...

The Brits are the UK musical awards ceremony decided exclusively on sales. Yes boss, the establishment picks and awards it's favourite establishment acts, invites one or two decent ones for the credability and hoots a load of cokey cola...

I learnt a few things:

1:) Amy 'drink the' Winehouse, Kate 'black' Hash, Adelle & Leona 'bleed the radiator' Lewis all graduated from the 'Brits' school. The Brits school is part funded by the Brit awards. It's a performing arts college...

2:) The Editors are a horrible band. A bunch of drab middle class fakes. The vocalist strains to be original worse than a photocopy of the Mona Lisa. They're the type of band the music bizz loves: Dull, obedient, vacuos. The bizz funds them for 3 or 4 years, passes them off as being 'cutting edge' then quietly drops them...

3:) The Kaiser Chiefs front man has a sense of humour (I stole the 'Leona Lewis bleeds the radiator dry joke' from him)

Here are a few other observations:

Bat For Lashes are hugely overblown.

Yes boss, I saw them (her) perform for the Culture Show last year and they (she) blew it. She didn't hit the right notes and it ended in tears. The whole act struck me as being completely cynical. The 'lets go and record in the woods and pretend we're genuine pagan pixies' routine. To compare them (her) with Bjork is absurd...

Kelly Osbourne has no discernible talent. She couldn't even hold the microphone in the right place. For that matter, both presenters were complete duds.

Highlights???

Richard Hawley got to say a few words...

The only talented artist there & they didn't even let him sing??? That's shocking..... erm actually, it's not because we are talking about the brit awards, which are all about promoting blandness.

It's a bizz do for the bizz, and the Che McGee ideas 'that myspazz has changed the bizz' look increasingly absurd...

the dinosaur is on its knees we know that, i read an interesting article in the paper recently about its dire state & the takeover of emi,i personally think myspace( an the web in general)is 1 factor that provides a new conduit 2 the pple, shit isaw the crystal castles here recently & i think they r the future of not just electronic music but rock as well an as far as i can tell they use the web 2 max effect, the gig was packed the kids went wild, but if i go 2 my local record shop just outside sydney the guy there cant even order me any of their music, the only reason i knew 2 go see them was cause of myspace, its weird i went 2 see my friend edu k on the same night @ the very same venue * even though he had a decent crowd & the place was jumpin the crowd size & energy was so awesome 4 the crystals i couldnt believe it it made even an old fogey like me feel young n alive again,so u just wait the bizz arent safe yet its only just begun!

Myspace certainly makes it easier for enthusiasts to get at the good stuff....

But I'd say it's made it much harder for smaller ACE acts to make any kind of a living for the simple reason that most decent ones are hopeless at doing their own marketing...

Sure, post-myspace you get 101 duff acts making small money who wouldn't have done so before, but the really good ones now also have to compete with these charlatans (in the short term at least) as well as the dubious big boys..

Basically, Myspace is a go getters/marketing platform and I don't tend to find that decent musical acts are very good marketing go getters...

I never watch award shows 'cause I think they're all fake. They're just a big self pat on the back. All the broken arms at the end of the night...

Good call...it's not about that place being a place to go.

It's all about the net now...less control is given to 'The Dinosaur'.

May it stay on it's knees...and then finally die.

Me neither...

But this wasn't even the awards, it was the announcement of the awards - they really have to bleed these things dry...

fuck i did it again oh i forgot 2 mention the only other "PERFORMER" u mention that i know is the sozzled & appropriately named miss WINEHOUSE so shes an industry created creature 2 that explains her indulgent behaviour, like meets like in the belly of the beast, i dont think much of her drivel either she should be called whinehouse,oh better stop ranting now its not good 4 me blood pressure, over n out.

I don't mind the Winehouse voice, but I don't like most of the material thus far. As with Pete Doherty, I think it'll become clear at a certain point just how talented she is....

I also think performing arts colleges should be outlawed in the interests of promoting individuality in art. There's nothing worse than a flock of fucking artists all trying to be unique in the same space...

I don't like artists/musicians or writers to flock together. Art is about individuality of vision, not a mooing herd...

AKA A little bit of artist goes a long way...

Artists should convene in places outside of an institution?

I agree.

Any merits at all for being surrounded by your peers in a place that helps you hone your art?

There might be a few we have both overlooked...I'm with you but Lilly is intelligent...why would she enroll if it was such a bad thing for her art?

IS Lilly Allen an artist?

Of course there's an argument that says everyone is an artist, but for me, Lilly Allen is an entertainer - as are all those names above...

As for the grouping thing - perhaps it's more particular to writers, but I'm strongly of the opinion that arty types shouldn't hang around in gangs - it's too indulgent and leads to vast VAST quantities of bullshit.

I also reckon that if you're gonna make art that relates to peoples ordinary lives you have to know something about (and have empathy for) those people, and this can be very difficult to have if the only folk you ever associate with are artists who live in the same wierdy creative wonderland as yourself....

You can always go down the pub in between lectures...

PLUS if you don't hang with the wierdo's you might not ever get your project off the ground.

It's different for writers than it is for musicians...

Yeah you're right - being in a band requires socialising by it's nature...

Bands are gangs...

Writing requires solitude...

I get very annoyed by arty pubs...

AND IF I SEE ANOTHER CUNT WANDERING DOWN BRICK LANE TAKING PHOTOS - I'LL...I'LL...I'LL PROBABLY WRITE A FUCKING BLOG ABOUT HOW ANGRY I AM ABOUT IT!!!!
