LET’S START THE NEW YEAR WITH A QUESTION....

Current mood: NOSTALGIC...
Category: NOSTALGIC... Quiz/Survey

So readers of the BLINGER: What musical films do you all like???

By musical films I'm talking either musicals recorded as films like Evita, full length Musical biographies / feature films like Pruple Rain as well as concept projects like Tommy AND Concert Vids...????

If I'm being totally honest, I really don't like the whole putting images to sound thing. It works sometimes but not often and I get tired of starring at abstract images very soon.

I also find concert footage to be a more than duff represntation of a LIVE gig..

My choice would therefore have to be a narrative Musical, and in that genre it's difficult to beat The Sound of Music.....

Yes boss, I was brought up on this kind of fayre and didn't like it all, but when I was aroundabout 22 I was living and working in a Youth Hostel in a very beauftiful area of Sussex.

The Hostel was right opposite former Labour Party Big (eyebrow)wig, Dennis Healeys house.

(I used his long and winding drive to test ride my bike when under repair)

It was also a stones throw from a large man in the chalk...

Back then was an easy and carefree life. 7 or 8 hours of simple work cooking, cleaning and doing reception..

then a quick bike ride to Cuckmere Haven for an afternoon of swimming and sun,

before returning back to base for the evening shift, a few quick pints of homebrew, a couple of joints then bar billiards all night at the pub, which we accessed by a footpath next to which lived a resident singing nightingale

and at that time the Hale Bop Comment overhead,

then back home for more boozing and dope...

REPEAT..

Anyway, I was on a day off and watching Easter TV and there, as always, was The Sound of Music and I thought it was completely brilliant!!!

You might have a point - I don't watch The SofM too often these days - though I'm going to Download it now...

Basically, I really love the colours. Technicolor was awesome - much nicer than what came afterwards, though about even with the hyper reality colours of today...

I also like the songs...

uhmmm, no epic tale for ya, but i liked 'hedwig and the angry inch'...? i finally gave in to a monty python film this week, actually sitting down and watching the entire thing. it was 'the meaning of life' ... despite the amount of boobage and children singing about sperm, it was ok.

my friends keep insisting that i watch 'the producers' and 'rent' but i cannot seem to cave to them just yet ...

Never seen either of these two...

I have seen Hedwig, but it didn't work for me...

If we're counting The Wicker Man as a musical, and I think it is a musical - then that might just pip The SofM to top spot on planet Giovanni...

i'm all for "dancer in the dark", a reminder of how truly amazing bjork can be when her head's not up her arse, and a wonderful example of lars von trier's mastery of all things cinematic... but mostly i find musicals to be just awful.

does xanadu count?

Thing is everyone has told me it's the kind of film to kill yourself too and i prefer to be happy...

Never heard of Xanadu??

Yes boss, back in those carefree days, I would spend quite a lot of time wandering about the hills listening to music....

Well having walked in those Hills in Austria I have to say they are prefect for those songs and what a great way of telling a complex political story!
My favourite of those kinds of musicals is however Oliver, just for turning a bermondsey slum into this singing dancing vision of Hell. I had to watch it again this week!!
Cry Baby is pretty good for a rock an roll musical and any film with Johnny Depp, Iggy pop and Traci Lords in it has to have something going for it!!
Music video's I would have to go for Pigpile by Big Black, but that is for selfish reasons as not only was I at the show it's of, but I was so rammed up against the stage that my head constantly comes into shot in front of the band!! That and the bizarre fake blood throwing incident at truely the most overfilled venue I've ever been in, the video doesn't capture the heat and smell of the Clarendon Ballroom in Hammersmith, how could it, It took me three weeks to get rid of the bruises I was so crushed in there. But at least I can relive it anytime I want to in the comfort of my own couch and most of it's on youtube as well!!

Yes, I think the story is sound and well told - as with Cabaret...

Frankly, anywhere that makes Bermondsey looks good should get an Oscar. I worked down there for 6 months for some gangster couriers and found the place really quite warm, but pretty damn scruffy...

The question of favourite pop videos is another one altogether that I'll no doubt spring onto at some point in the future - suffice to say, they don't make gigs like they used to...

Nonstop Everything

Pennies From Heaven, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma, Carousel, SOUTH PARK, Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady... I don't like what has happened to the musical. I actually specifically went to film school to reinvent this tired genre.

I don't know 'Sweet Charity' but agree it can be a great format...

Moulin Rouge, The Producers & Chicago were supposed to have regenerated the genre - but have they??

I really think The Wicker Man is probably the best musical that isn't really seen as being a musical...

The Wizard of Oz should definately be in the mix.

Moulin Rouge I found to be fabtastically clever but almost too clever.

It's a Wonderful Life - I've never seen

Chicago - Ditto

Nonstop Everything

in response to the comment about movies that aren't usually viewed as musicals, two more:
The Ruling Class (a tie w/ Being There for my favorite comedy ever).
And Once Upon a Time in the West (reminds me of Peter and the Wolf w/ all the musical characterization. plus, the cadence and flow is all very opera-esque.)

Treacle

Can you count Billy Liar? I'm not sure
But the Happiness of the Katakuris is too good to be true.
Don't deny Annie, I saw the whole thing in Korean at the weekend and it was hilarious- it came complete with a little Korean girl in a ginger wig, what more could you want from life.
Also Cabaret...
