RECYCLING STARS....

Current mood: PROGRESSIVE POP...
Category: PROGRESSIVE POP... Music

Thanks to Mrs Giovanni, I'm watching the latest prime time TV sensation which is basically The X-Factor for tribute acts...

Of course I pleaded with her to turn it off to save my sanity, face and musical credability, but I secretly wanted to watch it...

Why?

To see just how good the acts are..

And some are good - so good, that they're better than the real thing! (as is performing now, many years after the original hits were released)..

So howsabout this:

Popstars should be forced to resign their positions 5 years after their last significant hit (this is to be ajudged buy a panel of music experts including Paul Giovanni £rd)

The original artist is then replaced by the best tribute act of the day...

The originals can then go off on a generous pension, to lap up the sun, sort out their sanity and spend time with their much neglected families...

Everyone'll win....

The public'll get a good and passionate performance, the original artist will get time off, and some folks dreams'll come true!!!

Whadayasay????

Did you see that front page of The Sun when they were looking for Saddam??

It was one of those billboards depicting his evilness on the phone and the headline was

'Hello, is it me you're looking for...?'

She's watching Notting Hill now - I'm drawing the line at that (except to take the occasional look at Julias lips)

Your point about Prince is an interesting one, but there could be excpetions if the artist in question continues to produce quality work. Listen to 3121 and you'll know what I'm talking about...

i was going to ask. does anyone out there have the nerve to do a prince tribute? I have always had the theroy that there wouldnt be since he is so utterly untouchable...so why freddy?

with any luck prince will never retire. im a firm beliver that he is not even human which would explain his remarkable looks for his ripe age. he will probally live till 200 and release 3 albums a year...with any luck.

Now there's a thought, a Prince tribute act - maybe they'll have it in series 2...?

Thing is, the tribute act being awful doesn't stop people doing it. Indeed about 99% of them are awful - at least the ones I've seen...

I once saw an Aqua tribute act?? It scar/red me....

Aqua?!? jesus-shit!
the only tribute act ive paid to see was the LA doors. who were pretty good. mainly due to the face the lead singer (who was fat, ugly and blonde) passed a large bottle of jack daniels to the crowd. since there was only 4 of us there, i got very drunk. i then returned home and threw up on a girl i fancied.

A prince tribute act is impossible, i dont know many who could play guitar like him, i dont know many who can sing like him. and i dont know anyone who could afford the legal costs when he decides to sue them.

one day prince will sue us for owning his albums, we will get a letter headed with that adronomous symbol, informing us that we must burn all our prince CDs within 28 days. but he taught me everything i need to know about sex, so i forgive him in advance.

HA!!!

You're right. I bet the purple bastard will sue us for owning his records. Then he'll move onto all who've ever attended his concerts, anyone who's ever looked at him or his image, all the guitars he's ever played, the make-up on his face, and the 1962 Cadillac he once hitched a ride in...

But we'll still love him...))

TALENT IS THE ULTIMATE GET OUT!!!!

PS) I didn't pay to see Aqua, I was working as the bar manager in this club in my home town. I lasted the job for 6 weeks and made a point of ignoring anyone I recognised from school including my former neighbour & under 5 sweetheart Jodie, and one of my former best friends...

You've hit the nail on the head. It should be 5 years since the last quality record, not about having a foofin' hit. God I wanna see the back of Westlife and the like. With your theory they'll be here til i'm fucking dead!!! And what if you've never had one? No Miles Davies? No lotsa quality bands/artists that the general public aint ever gonna get.

Well, i thought I had that covered by placing myself on the adjudicating panel, but if the other 3 members of said panel are fizzjoblers like Simon Cowell & Louie Walsh, I'll get outvoted...

This needs a rethink...

I'm sorry but, "The wife made me do it" is the oldest excuse in the book...apart from "They doped me up on Diazapan and sat me in the TV Room"...

That "Britain's Got Talent" spin off was far superior, culturally speaking.

: THE FUTUREPROOF MUSIC BLOG BY PIOUS GIOVANNI :

Yes, it was an excuse. I'm pretty old school with these things. Basically, anything that looks bad or unbecoming of a man of my stature - blame the wife. (In fact, until recently I would shout Mrs G down when she turned the TV on POINT BLANK and make her listen to Stockhausen or Bird Calls instead..)

Anyway, I didn't see 'Britains Got Talent' apart from this act who my friend the porter informs me are members of the Fish Island community.

O yeah! They were good, them.

Is that one of those "Thermal Skinsuits" you were bragging about? This looks like the Disco version (with sequins).

The prog I watched tonite was a social-anthropological look at TV talent shows through the ages...well from about 1971 at any rate...featuring such classics as Bonnie Langford, Bobbie Crush, Peters and Lee, Les Dawson, Victoria Wood and Lennie Henry.

I only watched it so I could cry at the clip of Paul Potts again.

Yeah top draw..

I have a selection of skinsuits, my favourite is a Raleigh banana cycling top that is infact a top + generous miniskirt. I like to sleep in it...

Did they have Elio Pace on that show??? He had a good run on opportunity knocks. He was from my school. It created a real buzz did Elios run on OK..

With all this shit going down does anyone have a nasty feeling that pop really is beginning to eat itself?

If so, how long has it been doing this? Mabye it has been for ages and we are becoming such a sophisticated audience that we demand higher art?

Anyone care to throw thier hat into the ring?

I think what is happening is exactly what happenned with classical music...

The masters died, and since then there's been a whole load of people that would rather replay and pretend that time, than create their own thing...

I suppose it's a question of taste..

Some people like the classics to be played over and over again and some people like to hear new things. I'm in the later camp...

Defining new can be a problem within itself...is there anything genuinely new?

Mabye it's just semantics but 'fresh' music is something I look forward to.

Anything dubbed 'new' I'm very weary of.

What do you think? Sorry I'm total interview mode PLUS I've been stumbling upon some great new insights whilst reading the John Peel autobiography...that man had a great, loving family.

: THE FUTUREPROOF MUSIC BLOG BY PIOUS GIOVANNI :

OK..

New is misleading - different or fresh is more the word...

If there's no cover/tribute bands, then the music dies in a LIVE sense when the band members do.

However, there's more need for classical 'covers' orchestras because there are no recordings of most of that music made by the original composer...

With audio technology being prety good, I think I'd rather hear an original beatles vinyl at home on a decent system than go and see the Bootleg Beatles...

Helen

Is this show basically not just Stars in Their Eyes without the "Tonight Matthew I'm going to be..." bit, which in my opinion was the best part of the televised shambles. There was also the risk factor with Stars In Their Eyes that any young male performers might be tampered with backstage by the presenter. I'm sick of these shite talent shows, bring back 15 to 1 with William G Stewart.
