RADIOHEAD SAVE THE WORLD....

Current mood: 2 SINGLES TO PURITY LAND PLEASE DRIVER...
Category: 2 SINGLES TO PURITY LAND PLEASE DRIVER... Music

The news today is that Radiohead have suggested they're not playing the Glastonbury Festival this year because of 'environmental issues'

Yes boss, the fact that 100,000 odd people live in tents and eat mung beans for 3 fucking days doesn't appear to be enough 'greeness' for Thom and the boys....

Yorke, speaking in Brussells at the launch of the Friends Of The Earth Big Ask campaign, said that Radiohead were trying to only play at events with environmentally friendly transport systems.

"What we're trying to do now is only play in areas that have a public transport infrastructure in place," he told The Sun. "So that rules out Glastonbury for this year. Maybe we can work out a plan for the future. They're probably sick of the sight of us anyway."

Yorke went on to explain how he and his bandmates were making ecological concessions in their lives. "I am trying to build a system under my house that heats it naturally from the ground," he said.

"One of the conditions of the band carrying on touring is that we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment. That has included buying two lots of equipment and keeping one in Europe and one in America so we never have to fly our kit around the world again."

Well shit, I don't quite get this...

I've been to the Glastonbury Festival 5 times and each and every one of those times, I've gotten there exclusively by public transport....

Yes boss, there are countles extra train and coach services put on by the festivals organisers, together with a free bus transfer service from the railway station to the site...

So what is Thom suggesting here?? That Mr Eavis builds a fucking monorail powered by cow shit that circuits the site??? That he installs bus lanes or digs a fucking full and complete subway system powered by pop stars environmentlal guff for use on those 3 days a year???

Shit, it's this kind of fart, that further entrenches in me the belief that Radiohead are whinging and very silly cocks....

I mean, do these guys sit around all day and have meetings about this stuff? Who gets the credit for this kinda stupidity? If they really wanna lessen their environmental impact, they should all start wearing diapers to save on water, 'cause these guys are really full of shit.

Actually this statement by Thom has pissed me off a bit. I'm going to see em in Manchester I'm Driving! cheaper, Quicker more comvenient. Fuck public Transport! If they Where that concerned they would do a lot more smaller gigs in more places. There only doing three gigs in UK. London Manchester and Edinburgh! That means to see em most people are going to have to travel a long way whatever means of transport they use. It fucks me off that all these big bands don't realise all there fans don't live in or particularly near the three Big City's.
Rant over :-D

Ouroboros™

So if you are so sick of Thom and are so pissed about this whole thing, then WTF do you care if they aren't playing the gig then? You should be thrilled since you dislike them so intensely.

I for one would crawl to see them play if that's what Thom wants. I can't think of many bands I'd do that for...but I sure as F(*% would do it for Radiohead! There's a lot of music in the world...most of it shite. But every now and again, a band gets it right. And they have been doing so for years.

Besides that, only Thom has to live with what he believes in his life to be right. Stop making judgements on other people just because they choose a different path than you. I have boycotted by products made in China, for too many reasons to list here, but I still like Chinese people...Does that make me a Huge Cock too? Probably...but I'll live with it.

We all have to have our convictions. I am happy he is sticking to his. It's his music and he should be able to take it where he wants. He could not do a show for any reason. He could just quit music altogether. But instead, they just nearly gave away their album and are embarking on a huge tour. I think they are being kind enough to the fans...but that's just me.

I'm not bothered if they play the gig or not - I was questioning why they come out with all this crap??

Sure he's entitled to principles, but these ones make no sense and when someone talks crap, I prefer to say they're talking crap than ignore them...

I'm afraid we all make judgements on other people. you're making one on me by writing your response..

Oh, and can anyone explain to me why Radiohead have such devoted fans??

(PS) Sure they've given their record away for free, but Clinker and I'm sure many others have been doing that long before Radiohead did and they haven't got the bank balance of Thom and the boys...

In all honesty, I really don't see that as being any kind of a radical move so much as a decent marketing trick...

People love teamwork. If there is one thing that inspires devotion it's the idea of a group of people side by side taking on a challenge.

Radiohead do this in the extreme.

When's the last time you heard Thom slag off his band mates?

I hope the fans of my band will one day defend me from the likes of you!

You really love kicking those guys in the nuts man...

Mabye you should talk them up as much as u talk them down to provide a more balanced view?

Mog Harley's got it right though when he talks about the fans travelling to the big three cities.

Radiohead will get it right though.

Oh by the way...it's gotta be said...you risk your life taking about them in this way...Salman Rushdie man...that's all I'm saying! Radiohead fans are SERIOUS people.

Give em time I say.

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of teamwork - I much prefer the individual.

I find individuality is a lot more honest and a lot more interesting..

And you're right. I do love kicking Radiohead in the nuts. I have no guilt. Any band that makes me want to kill myself is gonna get it with both barrells. There's clearly plenty of folk who'll defend them, both on this blog and worldwide, so why should i worry about doing that???

For my money, being even minded is being full of shit. I allow people to make their points in response to mine and that's enough even mindedness for me...

Oh and if someones stupid enough to kill an imaginary character over a band - they really are fucking crazy...

I've given Radiohead 10 or so years and I dislike them more over time. I really can't see that changing...

Yeah, another vote for radiohead over here. If every popular band in the world had their attitude the whole world would be a better place & their influence might spill over in to the beuracratic realms of government where we might start to see some real change happening as far as cutting carbon emmisions goes. The world is in deep shit & Radiohead seem to be one of the few bands who give a damn about future generations. However suicidal their music might make you feel (personally I find it uplifting), at least they're striving for a future where suicide rates will be a lot less than if us ignorant motherfuckers say, so what! that all in the future, it's not happening to me, I don't care & why should I.

I disagree...

Musicians giving their heart and soul to produce timeless sounds and melodies is the only global contribution I want them to make - that is the only thing they're good at and they should stick to it and keep their noses out of politics they don't understand...

Criticicising a festival that has introduced more folk to environmental conerns and alternative ways of living than Radiohead will ever do is fucking absurd.

I mean lets discuss the actual issue Radiohead are talking about rather than whether Radiohead are a good band or not.

That Glastonbury doesn't have a public transport infrastructure is complete fucking bollocks - it does and it brings tens of thousands of folk to the festival year in year out..

Given that the festival is in the countryside where public transport is as rare as a laugh in a Radiohead song makes this even more of a fucking marvel that should be applauded - not cynically and cheaply criticised by Radiohead (who unlike the organisers of Glastonbury have only apparently been aware of green issues for a few rich and convenient years)...

The funny thing is, Seeing Radiohead at Glastonbury a few years ago was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. I agree that they shouldn't be slagging Glastonbury fesatival off, the festival goes to great lengths to try & get people there the greenest way possible, with car sharing schemes & Coaches ect, & the festival itself makes a huge effort not to leave an impact on the land afterwards. The paradox is that if you're booking international acts for Glastonbury, they will have to use air travel to get there, which is the singlemost serious contributor to global warming. Any kind of effort that anyone makes to save the environment is going to be fraught with some double standards, but that doesn't mean we should just give up trying. Maybe Radiohead can't accept that some double standards may be necessary to get their point across, maybe they're going a little bit too far, but I still doff my cap to them for at least making an effort.

I can take bands mouthing off about whatever issues they feel strongly about to some degree. They're as entitled to an opinion as anyone else is..

They (like everyone else does) do however have to talk sense...

In this case Radiohead were talking bollocks and nothing that anyone has said here has really engaged with the issue of what exactly the public transport problem is with the Glastonbury Festival or provides details of what Thom feels would sort it out...

Thom having the attitude that a venue in a city is 'greener' because it's in a city that has public transport (the provision of which has little or nothing to do with the venue or promoter) is pure crap..

I rest my case..))

I agree. Also Should these enviromentally aware bands be just making there music available by download only. thus saving resources used to make all there millions of Cd's and packaging. not to mention the pollution caused by the distribution. I'm sure Thoms Heart is in the right place I just don't think he's thought it through.

Exactly...

I'm sure there was demand for CDs, but the band could have stuck to their green principles and said 'NO CDS!' - but they didn't...

I hear a lot of folk supposedly exhorting green principles these days. I however find very few really know what they're talking about from Al Gore (a man so stupid he can't even win an election that he was nailed on for against a harridan thick idiot like Bush) downwards...
