FEATURE PIECE ::: COLOSSUS PT 3

"Change is Inevitable, Change is undeniable..."

So, like I was saying yesterday - I'm a social genius these days.

Yes boss, my retardation has disappeared and I'm now the life and soul of every party!!

How and why??

Well, for one: I'm getting tired of drinking alone. For 2, Miss Italy here, likes to have people around, and for 3, our windchime loving neighbour has installed a friggin pool table and regular party habit and this is starting to make me feel inadequate.

I've therefore decided to get lively......

Now, the only problem with this social rise in form is that Casa Fish Giovana is in the back end of beyond.

Yes boss, though this gaff would be perfectly suited to entertaining (sizeable dance floor, 2 toilets (neither with spunky creams man), local drug dealers, a large fridge + enough music to go 4 times around the world) Fish Island is miles away from town and the transport links here are utter shit…

Furthermore, so irregular sounding is the name Fish Island, that folk often think I'm joking when I invite them over. Yes boss, some worry they're going to get mugged or worse still murdered and chopped into neat bits, before being lovingly placed in a 4 year old suitcase and dumped in the lovely pea green canal along with the other 4 bod-

But seriously, Fish Island might be out of the way, but it not only exists in full Technicolor, it's about to gain extra kudos or boodos (depending on your interests) as it becomes the UKs biggest construction project...

Yes sports lovers, the day before yesterday the design for the Olympic stadium for 2012 was unveiled and there in the corner of the glowing, shiny new billion pound stadium is our quaint and buggish yuppie flat.

Make no mistake - the Fish is about to start jumping and before you can say LINFORD I SWEAR YOU NEVER TOOK DRUGS!!! We'll be having Christie around for tea and biscotti…

Talking of Linford, I once saw him working on Roman Road Market. He was selling fruit and veg as part of a 'trading places' type TV program. Being an admirer of the super fit, I stood and gawped at him like an enthusiastic child, hoping he'd notice and sell me cherries (sadly he didn't notice even when I followed him around…)

Anyway, that huge, but wholly self-satisfying digression is in some way relevant on this occasion, because one of the first guests to the new Casa Fish social hotspot was the long time backbone of the band Colossus: Rob & John AKA Spyder.

Now, if you've read this blog for a while, you'll know I'm a big fan of this band and since I first spoke to them a few months back, the boys have continued with their good and concentrated hard work...

After playing a packed out mid week gig in Kentish Town in September, the band are now lodged 3 evenings a week in the studio, where they continue to knock out more new and sparkling tracks than most bands manage in an entire career...

Yes boss, producing fresh material has never been a problem for
Colossus and with more than 10 LPs worth of recorded material already in the vault, the band are still working and refining their optimum sound...

The two latest tracks to see release
on their myspazz are Baraka & Baby Gimme One More Chance

Baraka is my favourite of the two. It's a sweet swinging meditation of a melodic rock track. Nicely formed, cleverly played, it's another new twist to the sound with a good underlying movement and a fresh pair of legs.

Baby Gimme One More Chance is more of a hands in the air American stomper. Indeed this one has something of a sixties rock 'n' roll track feel to it. Yes boss, now I think about it, this number reminds me of the kind of thing Noel Redding came up with when moonlighting as the singer guitarist he always wanted to be.

The releases might have been foaming, but, it's not been all fun and easy progress games at camp
Colossus this last few months.

Colossus have one main problem and it's a problem that's followed them throughout time - the drummer??!!

"We've had plenty." says John "Some have been good friends, but unreliable drummers and some haven't been up to the commitment. We've decided to pay for one for now and try and bring someone in with enthusiasm in the longer term. We really want to find someone who's got the relevant enthusiasm and drive this time and get the position nailed down for once and for all…"

Someone the band feel has certainly got the required drive is Nacho on extra guitars.

"Nacho's a great person to have on board." Rob says "He understands what we need and exhibits the attitude we want to see."

"Has he brought a change to the sound??" I asked

"We're always changing our sound – that's the great thing about being in Colossus"

"So what's on the agenda for the foreseeable future then???" I asked

"Well aside from a LIVE outing in just under a weeks time - this is the plan" Spyder said with his ever present air of calm and considered confidence "We're in the studio for the next few months to sort out an excellent 3 track demo - then next year we're going to play every and anywhere until we get signed by a major label..!"

For a new band this doesn't sound like a bad idea, but with so much existing material are many more new tracks really needed??

"We have albums galore, but we need a few specific tracks." Spyder replies

Well shit, I can only guess they know exactly what they're doing.

Indeed this is always the sense and sound I've had from
Colossus - that they do know exactly what they're doing, when how and why...

Yes boss, if there's one characteristic
Colossus have in abundance it's a calm and calculated self assurance about everything they do.

Belief oozes from this band, and it's my bet that belief will soon start to spread…
