Because of the haphazard ways and means of dance record distribution in the late 80s and early 90s, and the stupid ignorance of both the record business and music press to dance music in general, it's my bet there's a good mine of high quality hardcore, drum 'n bass and house eps beneath the surface of this wonderful planet all waiting to be rediscovered.
This release from T.Power probably isn't quite in that category: Indeed, the Police State EP must have had at least an hour or two in the sun upon release, but I don't hear a hell of a lot of mention of it anywhere now, so here we go with a quick and clear salute.
To put it bluntly, the Police State EP is a quite outstanding piece of work.
We're talking 4 neatly linked tracks of very fine dub soul music. These tracks have a rhythm and a flow that's so smooth and accomplished it sounds organic, pure and blessed.
So, what's the secret?
Well, this record pulses and rocks like all good techno and drum 'n bass does, but it steadfastly refuses to jump through the generic hoops so much dance music does.
Yes boss, like the LTJ Bukem and early Goldie stuff, Police State is a soulful, deep and complete record that doesn't rely simply on being 'banging' to work. There's no rockstar dancefloor moments. There's no killer vocal sample or buildups that will break your head because the writer of the tune has read every book on how to break it down and build it up.
In short, this is no lowest common denominator dance floor cheat - it's just completely fucking clever and very, very neat.
So, if I were you I'd get yourself a copy of this golden one off ebay sharpish, before they become proper scarce and pricey.
Originally released on S.O.U.R in 1995 Police State comes on CD single and on 2 bits of vinyl, including a limited edition release of red and blue...
