ALBUM REVIEW :: CYLOB - BOUNDS GREEN

Current mood: DREAMY
Category: DREAMY Music

I don't know what the name Cylob means to you, but to me it means legend.

Why?

Well with the exception of the Aphex Twin, Cylob AKA Kinesthesia has been responsible for the most releases on the always quality and generally BIG ball breaking electronic label Rephlex.

Yes boss, for years, Cylob was a staple and the reliable backbone of this, a label that together with Warp and Skam, has defined a whole new genre or maybe several new genres of music.

So if the world was right, 2007 should see Cylob living in some kind of palace on the outskirts of Paris. His average day should consist of getting fatter, smoking cigars and ordering a succession of bottles of fine wine from his amply stocked cellar.

But sadly we all know, this world is far from right – or maybe it is, because rather than Cylob being in a position to forget music and concentrate on FAT and FAT alone, Cylob is now recording exclusively for his own Cylob Industries label, he has his own mutli-faceted empire, he's on a release frenzy and Bounds Green is the latest issue in his long line of work…

So, what exactly have we got here then?

Well Bounds Green is a collection of older tracks all made in the early to mid 1990s in, well yes, the Bounds Green area of London. Originally left for dead, these tracks were unearthed recently during a DAT bltiz and here they are now available for general release.

Soundwise, we're looking at one of the more mellow and relaxing Cylobian efforts and one that contrasts with his other recent release Rock The Trojan Fader quite significantly.

Yes boss, whereas Rock The Trojan Fader (to be reviewed here very soon) is - once it gets going, - a relentless and almost savage blast of home made shibbercore synthesis, Bounds Green veers from the ambient to the haunting, slow, dreamy and sometimes ghostfaced wanderings of an afternoon siesta.

That's right, as with Aphex's Selected Ambeint Works 2, Bounds Green is the kind of album I like to put on to drift off into bliss. It neatly fits into that netherworld of wake and sleep, where you know you should be awake, but you can't be, and the reverb and the gentle rhyhms suck you in and under..

In other words, I like it a lot and wholeheartedly recomend you go here to sample and then think completely seriously about buying it...

scuba steve

Have you checked/reviewed the newest D'Arcangelo album (Eksel) yet? I've had my own Super Skunk assaults over the years, hence the tricky memory situations. I definitely like it. Rephlex is just one of those few labels whose output rarely disappoints.

No, I've not heard the most recent D'Archangelo, in fact I've not heard anything from for a good long while...

Rephlex is alomst alway bang on with it's releases. One of my favourites was the album by Ensemble called Sketch Proposals...

That's another undiscovered classic LP...)))
