CLASSIC AND FORGOTTEN??? EP REVIEW ::: T POWER - POLICE STATE

Current mood: PLANETARY
Category: PLANETARY Music

Such were the haphazard ways and means of record distribution in the late 1980s and early 90s, AND the stupid ignorance of both the record business and music press to dance music, that there must be a mine of quality hardcore, drum and bass and house eps kicking about beneath the surface of this wonderful planet of ours, all waiting to be rediscovered.

This release probably isn't quite in that category: It must have had at least an hour or two in the sun on release. But I don't hear a hell of a lot of mention of it anywhere now, so here we go with one today..

For me the Police State EP is a quite outstanding piece of work.

We're talking 4 neatly linked tracks of very fine Dub music, which have a rhythm and a flow that's so smooth and accomplished it sounds organic and blessed.

What's the secret?

Well, this record pulses like all good techno and drum 'n bass, but refuses to jump through the generic hoops that so much such music does. Like the LTJ Bukem and early Goldie stuff, Police State is soulful and complete and doesn't rely on being 'banging' to work. It's not a lowest common denominator dance floor cheat. This is instead clever and neat.

Yes boss, there's no rockstar dancefloor moments on Police State. There's no killer vocal sample or buildups that will break your head because the writer has read every book on how to break it down and build it up. Police State wouldn't wreck a dance floor, or be deemed irrelevant without one. It's simply quality flowing, beautiful music and regardless of whether it's received the respect it deserves, quality most definitely lasts...

So, if I were you I'd get myself a copy of this off ebay sharpish, before they become proper scarce and pricey.

Originally released on S.O.U.R in 1995 Police State comes on CD single and on 2 bits of vinyl, including a limited edition release of red and blue...
