ARGUING WITH THE KIDS....pt3

Current mood: BARK BARK!!!
Category: BARK BARK!!! Music

So, I think we're more or less done with this one now...

I said I wasn't in a hurry to see them, and the band were clever enough to show their chins and I wish them well - but if I were them I'd get better management/label....

Anyway this'll be the last update...

I said

Good luck...

They said

and by the way. yes we are too fiery happening and hip to be ashamed, its pc cunts like yourself that destroy any sort of personal opinions people have.

also the reason you write an internet blog is because your not good enough to be hired by any discernable press

kisses

I replied

Do your research before you open your mouth...
Don't presume anything about anyone you don't know..

And stop playing right into my hands...

pg)

They said...

the reason i havent researched is because i dont respect your opinion, and you may percieve what i say as playing into your hands, i on the other hand percieve it as honesty

I replied

The very fact that you don't respect my opinion is exactly why you should research it...

The way you're playing this is both playing into my hands and you behaving honesty..

And I do love your FIRE...

It might well work for you because your kicking against the pricks and maybe i am a prick..

But do you actually know what a prick is??

If you think someone questioning you is a prick, you're going to be in for a long, tough and i hope successful ride...

But be warned...If you wish cancer on people you've never met, many won't be so reasonable as me...

pg)

They said...

well i dont necisseraly believe that someone questioning me is always a prick but i will retaliate with as much gusto as i want and therefore i can and will say what i want when i want, i wont pussyfoot about like you and the other smug idiots who comment your blogs

I replied

I don't think anyone is pussyfooting...

And then...

as far as im concerned they dont, theres no balls, no hatred, your supposed rock and rollers, its wankers like you that have forced bands like coldplay to get big, i bet you rate starsailor

I replied...

CAN YOU NOT FUCKING READ?

DO YOUR FUCKING RESEARCH!

AND THEN OPEN YOUR MOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

etc etc etc......

I think McGee should know a little better and reel the management/label in a little before they become the new Oasis...

I'm very happy to trade BOMBAST and insults all day long, but only with worthy opponents and these guys are a one day wonder....

The cancer/Mike Reid (actor who died today) thing is just stoopid and from 9am tomorrow (after I've milked it a little more) I'll get back to talking about good bands....

Charles Bukkake

I think the reason middle of the road shite like coldplay has done so well is partly due to the lack of innovative and passionate music that makes it into the mainstream or the scenester scene stream

but i do like the way these waks people have no concept of PR
or maybe they do
the 'shit storm in a tea cup' could be the new version of cunning stunt's 'kylie minogue's arse on the side of parliament'

is probably just youth spirit and marching powder

anyway, your not getting any younger, i bet you need a lie down after all this vitriol
have a nice cup of tea and ask mrs G for a shoulder rub

just because you're old is no means for calling you a pissy cunt. or was that PC cunt? my geriatric brain can't keep up. though i do remember back in the good old days listening to the same album you appear to be listening to, that ol' dirty bastard. boy, we used to enjoy challenging music back in those days.

as for music not being for the over-25's, of course it's not. you should be too busy taking yourself seriously to leave any room for entertainment. curiously though, this stoush appears to be playing out in the reverse: idiot youngsters taking themselves so damn seriously that it's all about cultivating image while you, an old fart by anyone's measure, are slutting yourself around to all sorts of music type things... act your ages, damnit!

finally, congratulations on this fiery contestation... i fear that you may be punching below your weight though.

You are a 32 year old man who has spent the day arguing with an 18 year old kid on myspace, and you have taken some sort of pleasure from this. I'm the other half of WaKS Records im 23 and already consider my self well over the hill, I wrote you the message that started all this, I have been working since then as I have really things to do with my day I have not been on myspace watching this happen. How on earth can you take pride in what you have done, you are so very pathetic. If you would like a proper argument about how much of a losser you are then please call me, I'm going to message you my number. Me and Dan have bulit everything we have from nothing, if you want to consider this a win on your behalf please do so. I would consider being 18 and having already released 5 singles as a bigger win. Tomorrow we will wake up and contiue do what we love. You will wake up and spend all your energy on trying to take down another 18 year or some poor band that you happen to listen to. Is this how you thought your life would try out when you were younger? I think not, we at least still have a chance.

If you reply to this comment you are even more pathetic than this man, stop going on fucking myspace and do something with your life.

Have any of you got cancer yet?

So, this is it now. You're very boring and though I already made it clear I was going to forget all about you tomorrow as from 9am, I think I'll bring that deadline forward (I'm getting old afterall HA HA LAUGH LAUGH CANCER CANCER)

So, this band Hatcham really think they're something - or at least their management and label does...

To update, whereas the band themselves had the dignity, and i might add, class, to reply to my email in which i suggested they read the last blog with a

haha.

The management are clearly off their faces with youth...

This was the reply...

hello, im the other half of waks records and ive been reading your blog, first of all i feel you have put your self on a god-like pedistool, this is quite obviously undisserved, your musical opinions are typical of a middle age has been/never been, riddled with jealousy and a dedicated micheal moore fanatic, i bet you like such bands like cajun dance party and other such shite, i bet your a failed journalist or you used to tour manage for lush or something, it must be hard for you though looking at mcgee and seeing someone who made it and looking at hatcham who are making it as we speak, all the while why you sit there in front of your computer reminiscing of 'the good old days', in short your a padantic wannabee who never succeded.

yours sincerelly

dan waks

To which i replied...

OK kids...

Several rules that might help you on your glorious way to the top of the charts....

Never presume anything
Never presume you know anyone you've never met
Never let the opposition know what you're thinking...
But still keep the fire!!!

If you can do all that, you've got a slim chance...

At the moment you're making yourselves look like idiot twats and wishing cancer on a bunch of people you've never met - because of what???

Frankly you should be ashamed, but your too happening, fiery and hip for that...

and i'm just old...

talk about amusing! i recall as a child i really liked alot of music as i still do today. the difference is respect, for everything that it involves! as a youth i lacked that respect and the music biz people do as well. everyone on the block has their own music label and trend to be the next best thing! yes trend. and it seems today in a lot of cases everyone shows up to the party but no one brought the music. 13

The bit about Cajun Dance Party was well out of order...they may as well have said you married your sister and had a penchant 4 line dancing...the bastards, and although this has gotten well out of hand I understand your point about Alan Mcgee...for someone who once brought us My Bloody Valentine..and other such Creation classics(prior 2 Oasis) I'd be frankly HURT by the dirge he comes out with these days :-/ x

WaKS. Records

So then, today has been fun. We really have enjoyed winding you all up. The simple fact is that tomorrow, we have to get back to putting out records and you have to get back to being a self-important jaded middle age man. Popular culture will forever be dictated by the young, FACT, and no matter how much you try and believe that your opinion is worth while it just isn't. As a "music journalist" its is your "job" to push your thoughts on others, the music business is over run with people like yourself hoping that one day someone will listen to your pathetic views on a subject you have no right to judge. Music should never be graded out of 10 or reviewed by morons, As the internet becomes more powerful and the majors loss there grip on youth culture, people like you will forever be left out in the cold listening to your Dire Straits records wanted so badly to be part of something that has past you by. We are young, we are full of fire and we are very stupid, but we are also 1000 times more relevant to the youth of today than you. We don't make records for 32 year old self-important morons. We make records for young people, kids and teenagers, in all the glory. We would never expect you to understand our argument. But hay, at least I'm not a 32 year old man who has just spent his day fighting with a bunch of kids on myspace. I run one of the most important new labels in the UK. What have you done with your life?

Now lets hope you all go the same way as Mike Ried sooner rather than later.

ARGUING WITH THE KIDS....

Current mood: WARMING UP
Category: WARMING UP Music

Well today I got my first piece of discernible agression from a record label (about bleeding time!!)

It came from WaKs Records...

They took exception to a comment I made on Alan McGees blog about a band called Hatcham Social...

Basically, without making any effort whatsoever to hear them (a cardinal sin, it's true) I made the apparently inflamatory comment that I was in no hurry to see or hear this apparent phenomena in waiting....

I said this, because I'm tired of/have lost faith in Che McGee's musical choices.

McGee was good for bringing us The Boo Radleys, My Bloody Valentine and one or two other pretty decent bands about 15 years ago. But this supposedly alt icons lasting legacy is Quoasis - a band who appear likely to go on boring us with the same old, same old, for what could be centuries unless DRASTIC ACTION IS TAKEN!!!!

Yes boss, I'm afraid I've lost faith in the man and feel it's about time we moved on and past his selections. Specifically, we need to take our heads out of our US/UK arses and see the bigger worldwide picture, which clearly indicates that British music is now almost entirely lifeless in comparison with many other less fashionable countries....

More importantly, it's about time rich western kids stopped taking themselves in anyway seriously as being edgey, dangerous and radical....

Anyway, this is what WaKs had to say...

Hello,

I dont know were you get off Hatcham Social bashing, but OLD MEN should watch what they say on matters they have no knowledge on. What the do you know about youth culture its been 10 years since you were young. Your just another self rightgous jorno. Hatcham Social are viewed by many in the music bussiness to be the most important band to surface this year, bit if you didnt know that you must be so out of touch its not even worth me writing this message. I could spend all day breaking it down for you but your old man mind wont be able to get it. See Hatcham Social are for young people, music is for young people and popular culture is for.......thats right young people which you are not. As we become stronger idiots like your self become less important.

WaKS Records

To which I replied....

Dear WaKS...

Thanks for your kind words...

Firstly...

I am of course a wickedly old 32 on my birth certificate, but I have a mental age of aroundabout 8 and I therefore feel able to judge youth culture. And my conclusion is that todays youth culture is about as vaccuos as the inside tube of a friggin vacuum cleaner...

Yes kids, to be brutally honest, I don't think there's been a Youth Culture as dull, as conforming and as unimaginative as your generations is and I sincerly wish you'd pull your heads out of your Nokia arses (sponsored by vodafone) and do something lively and interesting before the future fucking dies...

As far as I can see, you kids have got no fire, no real rebellion, no passion and no balls. You're drenched with money and gadgets, but you still labour under the impression you're in some way vital, exciting, edgey and interesting...

Secondly....

'Hatcham Social are viewed by many in the music bussiness to be the most important band to surface this year'

This is the whole bastard reason why I'm in no hurry to hear them. Anything that the music business tends to excited about in advance is nearly always SHIT!!!

Of course I might be wrong and I look forward to hearing The Social - all I was saying was that I'm not holding my damn breath...

Anyway, all the very best...
Paul Giovanni 3rd

PS: Why on earth do you think music is only for YOUNG PEOPLE???

A war???

Let's hope so....

That's just hilarious! Yeah like anybody over the age of 25 isn't Qualified to understand "good music" I've just had a quick listen to Hatcham social and as far as I'm concerned The music style they haveis about 20 years out of date, (The Pixies and the Smiths come to mind) and also they have a completely shit name like a lot of bands these days.(The Twang or Pidgeon detectives anyone).
I notice that steve lamacq had them as his single of the week and he's no teenager. He also discovered coldplay I believe.

im pretty sure the music industry that creates and sells certain "youth" pop-culture is run by old and oblivious men.

the fact that this guy even responded shows that he has no identity and feels threatened by someone who can think for themselves.

extremely witty display name.

honestly this blog proves how out of touch you are, someone has said that hatcham sound 20 years out of date, this shows how musically illiterate and socially inept you pretentios pricks are, all there influences are from the early 80's and the only early 80's bands you can referance is pixies and the smiths, but this just shows how far your music taste digs........ not very deep, then you refer to them in the same light as the twang and the pidgeon detectives, you are all tasteless wankers who obviously only take your music prefernce from the nme or fucking Q magazine. maybe you should go record shopping and actually find something that the media isnt shoving down your throat.

hugs and kisses

an interesting eloquent argument, i think you will find the reason the twang and the pigeon detectives were referenced was that they are the bands that your target demographic, the people who are not yet to old to understand music, tend to rave about. in regard to how musically illiterate us pretentious pricks are, i assume you are referring to myself as well because i do not find the hatchams particularly ground breaking either, well i would argue that they are twenty years out of date. the reason for this is simple. the late 80's were essentially about rehashing the Motown, reggae and ska music from the late sixties, and restructuring its beats and narratives to emphasise more relevant social and important current issues, with varying degrees of success. unfortunately by proxy the music that the hatchems make references the music that was itself referential, its second hand music, they aren't a bad band, they just aren't important

too mary jane as far as the music industry being run by 'old guys' then you should research a bit more before you judge, im 18, ive put out 5 singles and i manage hatcham and have single handedly got them onto festivals and press, the reason all of you claim there so unimportant is because you are all the 'old guys' still wanting to bring back 'the glory days of stone roses' its quite pathetic to see all of you has beens, never beens and never will bees to think you can hold some sort of clout with your critiscism,

FEATURE PIECE :: COLOSSUS PT2

Current mood: BIG
Category: BIG Music

There's a shop called CHEAP BOOZE..

It sells exactly what it says it sells, and I stumbled upon it on the way to meet Colossus...

Forgive me going on about it, but I like the directness of this shop name. It's the kind of directness you only really get in more run down areas - where people need the vital information and don't have the time or energy for flim flaminous advertising that wanks prestige to make the pruchaser feel clever and superior...

I was so impressed with this shop that I did what every other stupid arty cunt does in Shoreditch when faced with accidental art - I took a photo of the sign...

Now, I hate myself for this, but I'm mentioning it because it led me to buying 6 Kronenbourgs in admiration and this formed the structure of everything that came afterwards.

John Clay AKA Spider, the frontman and founding ideas man of Colosuss, is waiting. He's on time and I'm late with my carrier bag of bargain booze. I apologise and explain I had to buy the booze even though it's not needed. He suggests we drink and walk with it. I like this suggestion...

Now, I imagine many of you will know all about the wankery of the area of London known as Shoreditch. If you've ever seen Nathan Barley you 'll have seen the parody, but as is often the case the parody isn't even much of a parody so much as an accurate depiction...

Yes boss, Shoreditch is an area swamped with trend and mucky NEW fashion. It's the area where wannabe creatives flock together and pretend to do work. It has the fop pissery bars, the stencilled graffiti, and the clever but intelligent restaurants...

Now, to be honest, I strongly object to artists and the like flocking together anywhere at any time and in any place. It's most often a horror show of pretension and idiocy, but I won't rant on about that now. I'm doing an interview - of sorts, and Mr Clay is giving up his time.

So yes, Mr Clay.

On first glance, the front man looks to be everything a rock star of these times should be. He's physically dominating, in control, in possesion of a quiet determination and a sense of calm. Attired in Black, he looks just the sort of man who should be fronting a big rock band - a rock band who are getting on their serious feet for 2007.

We walk and we talk, but Mr Clay is keen not to get into the meat of things Colossus until we meet guitarist Rob...

Indeed, for this first hour, it feels as much as if I'm being interviewed as doing the interview. As often happens, I can't help but talk about myself and my own attempts at greatness, past and present. I tell Mr Clay about being a
Butterfly Terrorist, about my nuclear book and my old music dreams. He seems keen to get to the bottom of who he's dealing with and I'm always happy to agrandise myself...

But it's not all one way traffic. John talks about his family: About his Dad who wasn't about, and then was. About how his Dad tought him to play guitar and told him what he had to do to make it: That he needed to keep his decks clear and focus on the goal...

We circuit Shoreditch, find ourselves a wall outside a large glass fronted office block. We perch and wait for Rob...

The talk gets serious. We're discussing whether the world can be saved. I say I think the ships left the port. Mr Clay spends his days convincing people otherwise. I don't want to lay on my full cynicism about how the time for Friends of the Earth was 80 years ago - I keep quieter..

Rob arrives. He looks fresh and keen.

Introductions.

John suggests we stay on the wall and drink the Kronenbourg...

So Colossus...Who are they and where are they at???

Well, Colossus have been going for a few years. They formation has changed - the drummers have mostly been the problem, but nevertheless, a vast archive of tracks has been made and recorded and an indie record label is interested. But the band choose to bide their time and wait until they're properly sure and ready as to how to go forward...

I tell them, they sound like a big band to me, and not just because their name is big - the sound is big and very pop rock. I can't help but think of The Stone Roses, not because they sound anything like them, but because the sound was so different with The Roses they were almost split before the music business realised what they had going on - i think this is the same with Colossus...

So do you want to be really big??
I ask hoping they'll say yes rather than look confused and talk about credability and roots..

They say they want to be huge and I sense many discussions have gone on about how big they are going to be. Many hours have been invested in the plan, the rise, the conquering of the charts, the critics, the stadiums, America, the world...

Yes boss, Colossus buzz with enthusiasm and ambition, taking it in turns to burst out about how much they want it and how they're going to get it. Colossus are clearly not a band intent on peaking after playing a few gigs to mild cheers in the pub....

This is what i like to hear...

As the sun begins to set, we move into talk about the current crop of rock stars - the competition...

Whereas they're reluctant to talk Oasis, Bad Boy Doherty gets a big thumbs down. This is where Rob becomes fiercely animated. Doherty seems to repel him. But after a while I can't help but think that both Rob and John have the same problem with Doherty that I have: That's it's him and not them...

I put it to them, and they agree - "Of course we're jealous..."

But it's not just that. Like many, they express concern for the impact on pop music when one of the biggest alternative names is known more for his girlfriend and drug choice than for his music...

"Colossus are about the power of music to build hope and dreams" John says "The music always has to be at the centre of things. Image is important but not MORE important..."

Amen

It's getting dark and we're out of beers. We walk back towards Shoreditch. For all the jim wankery, there's some good places around.

There's The Foundary, part owned by The KLFs Bill Drummond. Probably the scruffiest pub in the neighbourhood and always crammed upstairs on a Friday, if you track down to the art basement, there's a huge white open space with a few chairs and a spinning iron circle on the floor...

We take a circuit and I realise I'm drunker than I'd like to be.

CHEAP BOOZE

I take pictures of Colossus spinning and lean into a candle...

The beer goes down and the talk starts to get muddy, nothing new is being said. It's mostly my fault, I'm supposed to be jamming in the questions and firing the flames, but my brain is too mushy and tired to be serious and analytical.

Thing is, I don't know what else to ask. I know what i think already. That from what I've seen and heard this band can do a very long way. That if they get the luck, can take the knocks and keep producing the music, they can be every bit as big as their name...

Yes boss, this is a band I believe in, so there we go

Colossus

FEATURE PIECE :: COLOSSUS PT1

Current mood: BIG
Category: BIG Music

So, one thing i find very difficult is being pressured and forced.

It's a stubborness issue, indeed, some would say it's all in the stars, it's TAURUS!! You're a Taurus Paul, you're bound to be stubborn!! And maybe there's some truth in that, but my mum was born in July and she's exactly the fucking same as me in this regard, so maybe it's all a load of sacred bullcrap...

Anyway, since i started this blog and my 27 month adventure into music writing, there's only been one band who have really worked me into their hearts and this band are called Colossus.

I say worked - by this I mean they came after me and kept badgering me until they defeated the 'I'll take my own damn time' angle i dish out to most acts who approach with polite requests to consider their greatness....

Yes boss, the first thing I realised about this band is that these boys have determination and drive in abundance, and of all the boxes that need to be ticked to guarantee stardom in the music game, this is most certainly one of the most important..

Of course, by itself this trait can just be a hiding to nothing. A band also needs an image and an agenda and talent and most importantly (to me at least) some good musical ability...

So when I found Colossus had all of these, or at least the potential to have all of these, I became much more interested...

Yes boss, playing this band for the first time is deceptive.

My original thoughts were that they were a bit heavy and a bit discordant for my tastes. Rock is a dying art on Planet Paul Giovanni and something has to be very good to grab my goat and slaughter it.

But because Colossus bothered me, I listened a few more times and at a certain moment I realised that Melody was one of the finest rock pop songs I'd heard for a very, very long time...

Go take a listen, or maybe a few listens ...

Melody is simple, it has swagger, it has a tune, it's well worked, it's got energy and most importantly, it makes me think of big and successful rock bands...

Yes boss, put Melody on loud and you can imagine it being played in a stadium. Think The Stone Roses. It's a sound that's distinct and new and slightly awkward. The vocals are challenging, it asks questions....

But, like The Stone Roses it's gonna creep up, because you can't really locate it close to anything else and it simply sounds huge...

So, once Melody had clicked, I felt the need to talk to this band, to meet them and see how they shaped up in reality - was everything else in place?? Was Alan McGee after them or was he still obsessing over The Charlatans?? Could they walk it like they play and sing it???

I needed answers...

Thing is, I don't much like the idea of interviews. Asking idiotic questions, taping the answers then heading back to write them up seems like a wholly silly idea. But what else can you do???

Well, I figure the best way to get inside, is to spend some time with the subjects and get them to relax a little. To take a walk, have a drink, chat as if they were anyone else you might have met with whom you have mutual interests...

This is nothing new, it's how many journos work and in part 2. We'll go over what I found out....

SOME NOTES ON CLUB RICHEY

Current mood: UNSATISFIED
Category: UNSATISFIED Music

(this is another repeat - I repeat this one because i still need answers)

OK..

Incase you're unaware as to who and why there is a man with 4REAL cut into his arm as my profile shot for these next few days, I'll fill you in on the background.

The man is Richey Edwards and he was in
The Manic Street Prachers until he disappeared leaving only his car nearby the Seven Bridge that connects Wales and England.

Richey was instrumental in the first incarnation of The Manic Street Preachers. It was said that he and Bass player Nicky Wire were the philosophical and lyrical arm of the band: They dealt with the manifestos, the image, the sleeve quotes etc

I've never been exclusively convinced that was so, particularly since it seems (from his most recent album) JDB is more than able to write lyrics..

Anyway. the incident in which Richey carved 4 REAL in his arm happenned at the Norwich Arts Centre. The Manics were playing an early gig to 50 or 60 fans. The NME had heard a bit about their noise and wanted to see what was what. They interviewed Richey and suggested to him that he and the band wasn't 'for real'

Richey went off and returned with 4 REAL carved into his arm...

HERE YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE RESULTANT CONVERSATION IN THE OFFICE AT THE NME AS TO WHETHER THE BLOODY IMAGE SHOULD BE USED

So what was Club Richey??

Club Richey came about as the result of a loose conversation in the early hours of a November evening. Myself and a friend were discussing how lame and dull music was getting. About how no-one seemed to want to suffer for their music anymore. About how Rock 'N' Roll appeared to be dead as any kind of physical force.

My friend said the last great act of that type would have been Richey carving his arm open...

"Shit" he said "That'll be 10 years ago this May!"

We lived in Norwich at the time. My friend told me it had taken place in Norwich at the Arts Centre.

The next day I called up the Arts Centre and booked the bar for the 10th anniversary and we put on Club Richey..

In the months running up to it, we variously panicked and fretted over what we were doing. Were we glamourising mental illness? Or glorifying something that might be better forgotten for his own sake if nothing else? Or were we simply trying to build our own careers on the back of someone elses misfortune?

Whatever and whichever (most likely all 3 to some degree or another), we put the night on. Our stated aim was simply to put on a good commeration, because at the time The Manics were flying high and it seemed Richeys role had been forgotten a little...

About 50-60 people turned up (from what we can gather, almost exactly the same number as attended the original gig) We planned to re-enact the whole thing and had a lookalike lined up, but we chickened out of that at the last minute and a hasty cardboard cut out was made by a member of the audience..

We had readings and DJayed proper bleeding rock music and that was basically that..

Of course had myspace have existed then, we'd have drawn much more attention to this at the time, but it didn't and the whole night went more or less un-noticed...

So that was Club Richey...Anyone got any thoughts??

LP REVIEW :: LUSTRAL - DEEPER DARKER SECRETS

Current mood: OVER AND OVER AGAIN....
Category: OVER AND OVER AGAIN.... Music

Lustral
Deeper Darker Secrets
Baroque Records 2007

Oh blimey...

Well this reviews is late. It's very late. I recieved this way back in March or early April. I was stunned, I wasn't expecting free cds so easily and when they started coming, the best thing to do was put them in a pile and search the easy shots...

This one wasn't easy. It's pretty straight dance music and what can you say about pretty straight dance music???

You can say it's Friday night and forgetting the week. You can call it consistent and ploddy. Euphoric if you're on the right drugs...

And this double disc LP is all of these things..

There's a couple of stand out tracks:

Track 4 of disc 1 reminds me of work at
Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station:
12 hour shifts: Endless dishes, a continual energy, VIBE FM, an hour of cross country, CAFFEINE CAFFEINE CAFFEINE....BANG BANG WARM BANG

Meanwhile, track 8 of disc 1 is the sort of heavily compressed beats that can support your dinner...

CORE
CORE
CORE

BOOM!!

SOLID LUNCH...

It's about repetition

REPETITION

REPETITION

REPETITION

And if you like that

it works....

LP REVIEW :: THE YOUNG KNIVES - ...ARE DEAD AND.....SOME

Current mood: IN NEED OF HELP...
Category: IN NEED OF HELP... Music

The Young Knives
.....are dead...and some
Shifty Disco 2007

So, The Young Knives....

I don't know what to do with this band.

I played the disc one or twice and it didn't grab me - Ordinary indie pop rockishness, nothing special I thought. It went into the porbably won't get reviewed pile. But before it went there i ripped it to my computer to insure against being wrong...

Since then, the tracks have popped up at random in playlists, and twice i've found myself thinking Who the fuck's that?? I like that! And I'd look and it'd be The Young Knives.

So, I've taken it back out and returned it to the probably might well get reviewed pile. I've played it a few more times and I'm still not sure.

It's like when I'm expecting The Young Knives I decide I don't like it, but when I'm not, it jumps out at me and I do. Maybe I like it's dissonant Johnny Rotteny vocals and the bouncey fun choruses...

Maybe i'm suffering a Young Knives prejudice of some kind. Maybe I actually really like Indie Poppy Rock a whole lot more than I realise or am preparred to admit?! Maybe all my alledged interest in electronic stuff is mere posturing and denial?!

Maybe i need help?? Some theraphy of some kind??

Anyone like this???

Any ideas???

13headsmissing

from the few tracks i listened to it doesnt stand alone as anything really too unique...it seems to follow the trend of classic brit pop. i wouldn teven say indie rock because i didnt feel any edge too it. but what do i know? 13

Yeah, it's definately a bit supergrass

and you're right it's not really rock so much as indie pop...

I like the vocal. There's a bit of Holder and a bit of Rotten in there. It's quite distinct.

When I listen to the LP there's a few too many average tracks - musically in particular...

This is maybe why once offs sound better and the Lp as one and in one not so...

THIS WEEKS HITS :: WEEK ENDLING 28TH JULY 2007 :: PT 2 NEW STUFF....

Current mood: ROGER
Category: ROGER Music

Right then...

Screaming dogs and Cylobtic electronics aside, what have i been listening to this last week??

Plenty is the answer. In fact I've barely been turned off and have a large stack of new material that's still as yet to make it through the Giovanni rinser...

In terms of new myspace material, it's mostly been an electronic week...

AuDioMasteR turned out to be a very pleasant experience. Here we're looking at some nice melodic and fairly basic sounding electronic fayre. There's a lovely sense of tune here and I always like it when the tracks on the myspazz player are downloadable and free...

Jackson & his computer band is described as Tropical Metal and so it might be. This is a whole deal more frantic and more modern sounding than AuDioMaster. But as with the above has sublime melodic and rhythmical moments well worthy of your ears...

The top end of noisiness this week comes from KVKVG This is music to murder your parents to, and it also has the rare quality of replicating the sound of Paul Giovannis brain in times of strife...

In terms of more guitary indie stuff I have a couple to recommend this week...

The first is Botox Cowboys. There's a fair old mixture of sound here and i think that's the appeal. Yes, I like the diversity. In places it almost sounds like post and pre Syd Barrett Pink Floyd in other places more Ska. Good vocals 'n all...

Number 2 is about the only good news to come out of France in the last 7 days.
Our Absence Interesting sounds. Nice soothing qualities. Almost Morrissey like vocals. Good use of electronics...

And finally we have James Husband. When not working the day job with Of Montreal, Mr Husband is knocking out solo material on limited runs. His stuff has the same pop sensibilities as Of Montreal yet stands aside. I like it, shit, my
ex-wife might even like this - it might be something we can agree on....

Not much to add today...

I'm swimming around drunk and Mrs Giovanni and her sister are watching Fawlty Towers. There's 4 of these sisters in total, they're all Italian, they're all the same height and they all love Fawlty Towers, Manuel in particular...

Wasting time aisde, today I ran around the record shops and went to Saatchi & Saatchi to talk about films. That's as serious and stupid as it sounds...

After then, I bought more music with which to clutter my ears and this blog....

Also recieved the
Van Allen Belt LP and soon to come is an LP from Ladykillas
2
Cylob LPs as well as the LP of the year, thus far, they came from the stars I saw them vs reality

The future looks peachy fucking good...

CYLOB ::: REWIND

Current mood: BURNING...
Category: BURNING... Music

So the name of the game today was to ignore the drug hype surrounding the Tour De France and instead roll over to visit and capture some details on the current work of Cylob...

For the unitiated, Cylob has been producing high quality electronic music for 14 years. Recording mostly on Rephlex (13 singles and 5 albums) as both Cylob and Kinesthesia as well as 1 EP for Breakin Records, he's now striking out alone with his Cylob Industries imprint, releasing a whole bunch of new and fresh electronic pop rocking electronic music to die for...

I have a full interview and reviews to come.

In the meantime:

To learn a little more of Cylobs back catalog and biography click either this or this

To listen to and download mixes and scarcer tracks visit durftal.com

To buy his current super material go over to bleep.com and search for Cylob...

And if you need to hear something DANMWELLRIGHTNOW here's a taster.
There's three possible videos to this one track on youtube, some solicited - some not.

This is my favourite...

Yeah, there's a huge diversity with Cylob and the two newest Lps are amongst the best stuff I've heard from him...

He was saying his stuff is heavily influenced by late 80s pop music and tracks like Rewind and Cut The Midrange are perhaps the most obvious manifestation of that influence...

THIS WEEKS HITS :: WEEK MIDDLING 25TH JULY 2007 :: PT 1 VINYL STAPLES....

Current mood: OOHHHH
Category: OOHHHH Music

Enough of the moralising....

Let's get on with the hits...

Today I'm starting with the staples and new acquisitions section....

Now I know i bored you yesterday with details of my 6 for 60p deal, but I'm unbowed by criticism and I crossed the word 'regret' out of my dictionary some years ago...

So today, after exhibiting pain for the cameras, I spent about £35 on similar stuff and I scored great mountain points...

So if you're not interested look away now...

OK...

This time we're talking mostly vinyl and books.

I'm not going to real all the book titles off - I can't be bothered, except to say I got a Van Halen Tablature book, a biography of Michelangelo, a biography of Boy George and a supposed warts 'n all account about working in the UK music business...

As for the rest, I'll review them if and when i ever read them (fucking unlikely)...

Onto the Vinyl..

WOW..

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome LP (Great artwork, excellent prog pop LP)

DJ Lelewell - Magic Atto 2 12" (The other day I was wondering where this guy had disappeared to?? Now I reckon I know)

Igor Stravinsky - Le Sacre Du Printemps LP (Clever Classical)

The Levellers - One Way 12" (Great sentiment)

The Eurythmics - Be Yourself Tonight LP (and everyday)

The Reese Project - Direct Me 12" (You can never have enough Kevin Saunderson)

Daft Punk - One More Time 1 sided 12" promo (Splendid damn tune)

Britney Spears feat Madonna - Me Against The Music 12" (Good luck...)

DJ's Factory - A View To A Kill White Vinyl 12" (BLING $$££ BLING)

Michael Jackson - Heal the World Special poster bag Edition 7" (Save The Children)

Pet Shop Boys - So Hard 12" (There's always hope for wannabe pop stars posing as music journalists / see above)

Michael Furlong - Breakaway LP (I rarely buy vinyl for the sake of the cover, but this grabbed my balls)

Various - Mega Bass The Ultimate Megamix of The Hottest Club Hits LP ( 2 sides of brilliantly mixed rave pop)

Loadasamoney - Loadsamoney doin 'up the house 7" (Crap comedy pop)

Wynton Marsalis - Haydn/Hummel/Mozart LP (The debut LP from Wynton Marsalis)

Leftfield - Song Of Life 12" (This kind of quality should never be in charity shops)

Spiritualized - Stop Your Crying 12" (The dismal self pitying side of Spiritualized at it's very best)

Winx - Hypnotizin 12" (Classic Rave)

Teardrop Explodes - Serious Danger 12" (Julian Cope? A Crime Against Creation??)

Grange Hill Cast - Just say No 7" (You don't have to be part of the crowd)

Django Reinhardt - Djangology 2xLPs (Double jazz of which i know nothing)

Tricky - Tricky Kid 12" (Everybody wants a record deal, Everybody wants to be naked and famous, Everybody wants to be just like me...)

Tricky - Makes Me Wanna Die 12" (One of the most beautiful songs of 1997)

Supertramp - Crisis What Crisis? LP (Exactly my thoughts on the current state of professional cycling)

Roberto Delgado And His Orchestra - CARAMBA LP (Hot Rhythm From South America)

Edelweiss - Edelweiss 7" (Made using The KLFs book 'How to Have Number 1 Hit The Easy way' It reached Number 4 in the UK charts, but was a Europe wide number 1)

Barclay James Harvest - Victims Of Circumstance Shaped Picture 7" (BLING $£$£??)

Yes Boss - More Or Less 7" (Yes boss)

Kylie - Slow Picture 12" (Kylie trying to be Brigette singing Slow)

And lastly, 3 Laserdiscs. Laserdiscs were an early LP sized version of DVDs. I picked up 12 Monkeys, Se7en & Heat. Of course I don't have a Laserdisc player, but I'm certain they'll make fucking great glitter balls...

MORALISING JOURNALISTS??? SOUNDS LIKE JUNKIES AGAINST DOPE....

Current mood: HIGH
Category: HIGH News and Politics

It's been a busy week...

3 drugs scandals in the Tour, 8 drugs scandals on Planet Paul Giovanni.

And the general feeling in myself, is that the journalist puritans, who like myself, use all kinds of performance enhancing drugs to enable them to do their shit eating jobs, should shut the fuck up with their moral crusade against drugs in sport or else become hardcore christians and be done with it...

Yes boss, I can take chemical puritanism from monks who eat sackclothes and grow chickens, but not journos and cycling hangers on, who spend more hours in bars and in the cubicle talking to charlie than your average tour rider does riding up the mountains...

I mean, imagine the chaos if artists, musicians and writers and JOURNALISTS were banned from creating for 2 years if they were caught taking drugs??

Nothing would get done!!! No books, no music, no fucking art!!! And the newspapers would be like colouring books....

What I'm driving at, is that I find it completely absurd that your right to do an inspirational job - a job that provides passion and excitement for millions - can be taken away from you for taking onboard things that make you do it better....

Furthermore, I'm completely sick and tired of all this two faced moralising and idiotic posturing by dullards who can barely even write their own fucking copy to a half decent standard, let alone cycle up a mountain at 25kph...

I therefore feel it's high time us honest journalists started standing up in solidarity with all sportsmen who have tested positive and I therefore do solemly declare...

That I Paul Giovanni 3rd AKA Futureproof Pious am a 'Man in Black' (1)

I happily admit I love nothing more than to take performance enhacing drugs, using a strictly supervised program, designed to further inspire and improve my creations...

I completely refuse to accept that this is wrong in anyway (because by doing so i would invalidate almost my entire collected archive of others music and writing)

I also steadfastly refuse to make myself available for anykind of in or out of competition tests and anyone who wants to moralise about this can go talk to Jesus...

OK????

1: UCI goes after the "Men in Black"

The UCI has targeted "six or seven" top riders who are suspected of using doping products, by subjecting them to extra unannounced doping controls. Some of these riders have already produced "non-negative" results, according to Anne Gripper, director of the UCI's anti-doping program. "We have picked out six or seven riders who are considered high-risk cases because of their suspect behaviour and subsequent good performances in the Tour de France," she told the press agency Belga. Some of these riders "have already had three or four unannounced doping controls," although the UCI only requires one per rider per year.

Gripper said that "We have information that they train in strange places." The controllers refer to the riders as the "Men in Black", because they wear neutral clothing on their training rides, rather than their team kit, which helps them avoid attention by the UCI controllers.

"Some of the results may well be announced before the start of the Tour de France," Gripper said. "Several abnormal results have already come in. We are busy with those results and not all of them are negative," she said, "but it will take time, because we have to respect the process, the analysis of the B samples, before we can make any announcements."

Wow! I never thought of it like that. Hear hear. Maybe they should have two seperate competitions one for dopers one for straights. and with the olympics too. hell! it might even make the olympics entertaining.
If performance enhancing drugs where allowed? where would it end though? Would it eventually enable people to be superhuman. Yknow like be able to run at 60 miles an hour.

Well the philosophy of having one clean and one dirty race is fine in principle but you'd get average racers from the dirty race (who weren't good enough to win it - even with drugs) trying to cheat to win the clean race...

Substance use/abuse is an individuals choice, not a governments/governing bodies and seeing as though no drug war, whether it be 'prohibition' in the states, or the equally ridiculous and still current war on recreational drugs has been won or even come close to being won, there seems to be little point in waging such wars...

Sure 60mph humans are possible and why the hell not?!?

Fantastic blog! Can you read French (I know I can understand written Italian quite a bit so I was wondering...)? Because at least there are some journalists at Liberation who don't write the sort of goody-two-shoes crap that you read elsewhere.
"Chemical puritanism from monks"??? Monks are usually people who make special, head-blowing spirits, which help them getting closer to God, getting into transes, that sort of thing. Maybe there are gonna be special brigades checking on that too, sometime soon...

I can read French to a degree and have bought L'equipe many times when watching the Tour in France to catch up on the racing news....

Good point about the monks...

I think the thing i don't get with the whole drugs question both in sport and as a way to get high, is how and why the media are only ever to discuss and see the bad side. I don't deny it exists - I've seen it existing, but i've also seen a hell of a lot of people having a FUCKING BALL!!!! on drugs and with few exceptions, I've always had a great deal of fun whilst off my face...

So why is that side never given it's due weighting??

Madeleine

have just been watching sherwin going on about messages the sport is sending to the kids

hello what the fuck is going on?

the kids are alright and may well be off their rockers and you know what good luck to them

my mother was a journalist and the amount of drinking and generally drug taking journos get up to is pretty well on a par with the rest of the bloody community and in a lot of cases worse.

lets have the commentators tour and see how many red wines and fags they can have and then make it up a mountain.

people take drugs

the war on drugs is moronic and unwinnable but damn good propaganda to keep peoples eyes off the prize.

The kids pay attention to sexy, exciting and aggresive role models who have passion and fire...

The kids love Jim Morrison not Percy Thrower....

Rather than drug tests, journalists should have to undergoe bullshit tests..

Their writing should be checked for detectable levels of bullshit in parts per ten..

Most would struggle to stay under the 3 allowable....
